SummerSlam

August 19, 2001

Compaq Center at San Jose

San Jose, California

News & Notes: I only have some extra storylines to discuss in this intro. Austin wanted to lead the Alliance by example after Invasion. He praised those who got the job done, but he berated those who failed. Tazz stood by while the Rock attacked Shane, so Austin whipped him with a belt. Meanwhile, Torrie and Stacy went after Jackie and received help from a surprising source. Ivory ambushed Jackie and joined the Alliance. Elsewhere, the team of Big Show and Billy Gunn found a name. Big Show picked Show Gunns, much to Billy’s annoyance. In other news, Terri made Saturn choose either her or Moppy. When he chose the mop, Terri swiped it while Saturn wasn’t looking. She also began dating Raven to spite Saturn. And finally, Shane Helms proclaimed his love of comic books and started calling himself Hurricane Helms. The gimmick evolves over the next few weeks.

Now I have one more piece of news before I start the review. The WWF debuted the iconic giant fist set on the go-home Smackdown. Jericho and Rhyno destroyed the old one, so they updated the look. This one sticks around for a while.

The opening video of WWE SummerSlam 2001

The event opens with the music video for “Bodies” by Drowning Pool. The only difference is the man in the chair is looking at WWF action on the TV. They present clips of most of the Superstars competing in this PPV. We see footage of Austin, Angle, Booker T, the Rock, and more. Everyone hits their finishers and poses for the camera. The WWF reuses a lot of these scenes for the Smackdown intro in the future.

Then fireworks explode while JR welcomes everybody to SummerSlam. While Ross and Heyman discuss the card, Lance Storm arrives for the opening contest. He wants to be serious for a minute. Lance says there is no place for offbeat shenanigans around here, and he will explain why if no one interrupts him. A moment of silence passes, so Storm says, “Splendid.” However, Edge’s music plays when he tries to continue. They also show the WWF locker room watching this on a monitor. Christian holds Edge’s trophy for him.

Lance Storm vs. Edge - WWE SummerSlam 2001

Intercontinental Title Match: Edge vs. Lance Storm (c)

Storyline: Storm defeated Albert to take the Intercontinental title after Hugh Morrus interfered. Then Storm defended it against Saturn and used Moppy as a weapon to win. He even challenged Kurt Angle, but Kurt won a non-title bout. Later, Storm and Kanyon fought Edge and Christian, and Lance pinned Edge after Kanyon dropped Edge on the title belt. This led to Christian vs. Storm for the IC gold. Before the encounter, Christian tricked Lance into doing a 5-second pose, and Edge pulled Storm’s pants down. However, Lance beat Christian while using the ropes for leverage. Next, Lance cost Edge a chance to capture the Hardcore championship. Afterward, Storm and RVD gave Edge a Conchairto! Storm also put Edge in the Maple Leaf after Edge and Christian succeeded against Storm and Credible. And finally, Lance ruined Edge and Christian’s tag title shot.

The Match: They trade holds and takedowns until the action spills outside. Back inside, Edge scores a flying crossbody and attempts a DDT, but Storm drapes him on the ropes. Now Lance focuses on Edge’s ribs with kicks while taunting him. Edge tries to fight back, so Storm uses a rolling Samoan Drop and a modified crossface. He continues with an ab stretch, but Edge breaks free. After this, Edge catches a flying Storm and lands a powerslam. He follows with a wheel kick and the Edge-O-Matic. Plus, Edge turns a dropkick into a powerbomb. Neither gets the three, and Storm hooks Edge in the Maple Leaf, but Edge reverses it into one of his own. While this happens, Christian runs to the ring. He looks to spear Storm and hits Edge by accident. A superkick gives Storm a close two, but Edge ends it with an Impaler.

Thoughts: This was good. They set a nice pace and built to a crescendo. Furthermore, the crowd reacted well to it. Seeing Edge win a singles title was great. He’s about to go on an amazing run.

Winner: Edge (New Champion) (11:16)

Afterward, Christian hands Edge the Intercontinental title and hugs him. Edge looks confused as Christian leaves, but he still poses with the belt.

Michael Cole interviews the Dudley Boyz and Test - WWE SummerSlam 2001

Backstage, Test and the Dudleys talk about beating up Spike, but Cole interrupts them. He asks Test why he turned on the WWF, so Test calls him a little bitch. Test says it was the other way around. Cole and the WWF turned on him. He walked around with the WWF guys and talked about how great they were. How did they repay his loyalty? They gave him an ass-kicking he didn’t deserve! Then we have the Dudleys. They are the greatest team in the WWF’s history, but the WWF tried to overshadow them with their scrawny, muskrat-looking half-brother and that tramp, Molly Holly. Therefore, they found a team that cares about its troops. Shane-O-Mac knows what the cream of the crop really is. Tonight, they will show him loyalty.

Lilian Garcia interviews Chris Jericho - WWE SummerSlam 2001

Next, Lilian interviews Chris Jericho. She says he overcame what Stephanie threw at him, but tonight he faces someone he hasn’t beaten yet in Rhyno. Jericho sarcastically thanks her for pointing this out. He admits he hasn’t defeated Rhyno, but there is a first time for everything. Jericho says you always remember your first time. Take Stephanie, for instance. Chris is sure it was a memorable experience for Stephanie and the captains of the football, basketball, swimming, and volleyball teams. He even adds in the French and Latin clubs and the AV squad. Plus, you have Olaf, the foreign exchange student! With that said, Jericho says Stephanie has the home-field advantage here in Silicon Valley. However, he will do something to Rhyno Stephanie has no concept of. He will lay him flat.

The Dudley Boyz & Test vs. The APA & Spike Dudley - WWE SummerSlam 2001

The Dudley Boyz & Test vs. The APA & Spike Dudley (w/ Molly Holly)

Storyline: Test still held anger toward the WWF guys for attacking him when they thought he was the mole, but he vowed to stay with the WWF. This was a lie. Test attacked the APA for revenge. He helped DDP and Kanyon take the tag titles from the Acolytes and joined the Alliance! Later, Test fought Spike. He kept powerbombing him until Molly intervened, but the APA stopped Test from doing the same to Molly. Meanwhile, the Dudleys wrestled Edge & Christian and Taker & Kane in table matches. They wanted to drive Sara through a table, but Kane prevented this. The Dudleys even faced Jericho and Angle after Jericho humiliated Stephanie. They asked for a handicap fight, but Regal allowed Jericho to find a partner.

The Match: The Dudleys score their back suplex/neckbreaker combo on Faarooq, but Faarooq answers with a spinebuster. Now Bradshaw comes in and looks for a powerbomb, so Bubba stops him with a cheap shot. Next, Spike tags and attempts some pins until Bubba gives him a hotshot. Test adds a spinebuster and punches while the Dudleys collect a table. They can’t put Spike through it, but they land a double flapjack. When D-Von goes for a diving splash, he misses, and Spike tags Bradshaw. He cleans house with knockdowns and a neckbreaker before the APA hits a double spinebuster. This causes a wild brawl. During the chaos, Test blocks a Dudley Dog and throws Spike onto the table. However, Bradshaw nails the Clothesline from Hell on Test, but the ref is checking on Spike. While this happens, Shane McMahon whacks Bradshaw with a chair, and Test covers for the three.

Thoughts: This was enjoyable. They didn’t let the action drag and Spike took some nasty bumps to keep it exciting. My only minor gripe is there were a few moments when someone entered without a tag. Nick Patrick was the ref, so it might have been intentional, but they never acknowledged it.

Winners: The Dudley Boyz & Test (7:18)

Christian talks to Edge backstage - WWE SummerSlam 2001

The loss disappoints the WWF locker room, but they still celebrate Edge’s win. Matt Hardy shakes Edge’s hand and congratulates him on bringing the Intercontinental title back home. While he says this, Christian arrives. He calls Edge’s victory great, but Christian has news that reeks of awesomeness. Christian went to Regal’s office and got a European championship match on RAW tomorrow. Matt wishes him luck, but Edge looks conflicted. Before Edge can talk to Christian about it, Christian gets a phone call from their grandma Edna. He tries to tell her about his big news, but she would rather speak with Edge. Edge accepts his grandmother’s congratulations and says he will talk to her next week. Then Edge hands the phone back to Christian, but their grandma hangs up on him. Christian blames the phone.

Shawn Stasiak talks to Debra backstage - WWE SummerSlam 2001

Debra looks through her day planner backstage, but Shawn Stasiak interrupts her. She berates him for not knocking, so Shawn offers a mumbled apology before moving on. Stasiak admits he screwed up in the past couple of weeks while trying to impress Austin. He blames his tights. They are bad luck! After all, they are pink and they have stars on them. Plus, it says Mecca on the back, and he doesn’t know what that means. Debra says no one cares what it means, especially not Austin. He is too busy preparing for his match. They are on the same team, so she tells Shawn to go kick some butt if he wants to impress Austin. And next time, he should think about knocking!

Now it’s time for X-Pac vs. Tajiri in a title for title match. X-Pac holds the WCW Cruiserweight belt while Tajiri is the WWF Light Heavyweight champion.

X-Pac vs. Tajiri - WWE SummerSlam 2001

Cruiserweight & Light Heavyweight Title Match: X-Pac vs. Tajiri

Storyline: X-Pac fought Kidman in a rematch. This time, he landed a super X-Factor to become a double champion! However, X-Pac wrestled Tajiri, and Tajiri captured the Light Heavyweight belt from him after using the green mist. An infuriated X-Pac confronted Regal about this. He wanted a tag match against Regal and Tajiri, but Spike Dudley took Regal’s spot. They faced X-Pac and Albert, and Albert gave Tajiri the Baldo Bomb for the victory. This led to Tajiri vs. Albert. During the contest, Tajiri used red and green mist to thwart X-Pac’s interference and succeed. And finally, X-Pac and Albert got their encounter with Tajiri and Regal. Albert attacked Tajiri from behind and did the Baldo Bomb for another pinfall on Tajiri.

The Match: They exchange holds, takedowns, and knockdowns until Tajiri lands a standing moonsault. Then he sends X-Pac outside with a headscissors and nails an Asai Moonsault. Back inside, Pac grounds Tajiri with a rolling surfboard and turns a dropkick into a powerbomb. Nevertheless, Tajiri evades a Bronco Buster and gives X-Pac a baseball slide while he’s caught in a tree of woe. Tajiri follows with the Tarantula and a flying crossbody, but Pac rolls through the latter. This leads to a series of counters and pin attempts before X-Pac does a somersault plancha. He even hits the X-Factor, but Tajiri turns X-Pac over for a pin when X-Pac covers. This draws Albert to the ring. Tajiri fends him off with the red mist, but X-Pac throws a low blow and ends it with the X-Factor.

Thoughts: This was great. They maintained a fast pace and did some impressive moves. Tajiri’s baseball slide to X-Pac’s face looked and sounded brutal. Having a hot crowd also helped. The fans love Tajiri and hate X-Pac, so they were vocal.

Winner: X-Pac (Double Champion) (7:33)

Saturn is looking for Moppy - WWE SummerSlam 2001

Next, they go to Perry Saturn at WWF New York. Saturn is still looking for Moppy. He says someone kidnapped her because he knows she wouldn’t run away. They are in love! Therefore, Saturn asks the fans to help him. The people at the American Dairy Council put her face on milk cartons, and Saturn has one of them. Saturn shows the carton while describing what Moppy looks like. She’s beautiful, and she’s in great shape. You can spot her hair from a mile away! Saturn says he looked everywhere, but he couldn’t find her. He tells Moppy he misses her and says, “You’re welcome.”

Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley talks to Rhyno backstage - WWE SummerSlam 2001

Meanwhile, Stephanie talks to Rhyno backstage. She hopes he understands how important it is for him to take out Jericho for good. Stephanie chose him for a reason. Rhyno is special. Jericho has never defeated him. She tells Rhyno to gore Jericho through the ring, but Rhyno stops her when she becomes heated. Rhyno assures her he will end Jericho once and for all.

Rhyno vs. Chris Jericho - WWE SummerSlam 2001

Chris Jericho vs. Rhyno (w/ Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley)

Storyline: Jericho got on the bad side of the Alliance by challenging Kanyon and Tazz to matches. He also humiliated Stephanie. Jericho had two guys in costumes from Planet of the Apes help him smash a pie into Stephanie’s face. As a result of Jericho’s antics, Steph had Rhyno gore Jericho on multiple occasions. He gored Jericho through the old Smackdown set! These attacks didn’t stop Jericho from mocking Stephanie. He made fun of her for getting implants. Then Jericho vowed to get that smelly, greasy animal at SummerSlam, and he would beat Rhyno too! Later, Jericho and the Rock wrestled Rhyno and Booker T. During the bout, Stephanie nailed Jericho with a chair, and Rhyno rolled Chris up for the win. Afterward, Rhyno gored Jericho again.

The Match: They exchange strikes and knockdowns until Rhyno spills outside. Then Jericho nails a triangle dropkick and climbs the turnbuckles. Stephanie grabs his foot, so Jericho shoves her away. When he dives at Rhyno, Rhyno gores him out of the air! Now Rhyno wears Chris down with a bodyscissors. He even does an airplane spin into a cutter before grabbing a kneeling surfboard and a chinlock. Once Jericho escapes, Rhyno misses a flying splash. A double down follows before Jericho rallies. He does two Lionsaults, but he slips on one of them. Sensing trouble, Stephanie tries to slap Jericho, so Chris kisses her! This allows Rhyno to attack Jericho and put him in the Walls! Jericho gets a rope break, but Rhyno lands a belly-to-belly and looks for the Gore. Chris avoids it and rolls Rhyno into the Walls for a submission.

Thoughts: This had some shaky moments, but it was still a solid encounter. It’s a more impressive performance when you know Jericho had his bell rung on the mid-air Gore. This explains the slip-ups, so it’s understandable. They worked around them well.

Winner: Chris Jericho (12:34)

Stephanie throws a fit and leaves Rhyno at ringside. While this happens, they show a replay of the kiss, so Heyman begs the truck to show something else. Meanwhile, the officials help Jericho out of the ring.

William Regal talks to the Rock backstage - WWE SummerSlam 2001

William Regal stops the Rock backstage for a word. He asks the Rock if he’s 100% after Thursday, but this annoys the Rock. Yeah, he took a Rock Bottom through a table. They hurt him and put him down, but he’s still here. Booker T didn’t keep him out of SummerSlam. He only pissed the Rock off. Then the Rock asks Regal if he hears the fans and feels the electricity in the air. Regal says he does, so the Rock asks if he smells it. As Regal asks what he means, Stasiak runs into the frame while screaming. They sidestep him and Shawn smacks into a garage door. Regal and Rock continue their conversation as if nothing happened. The Rock asks if Regal smells what he’s cooking.

RVD vs. Jeff Hardy, Ladder Match - WWE SummerSlam 2001

Ladder Match for the Hardcore Title: Rob Van Dam vs. Jeff Hardy (c)

Storyline: RVD was a busy man after winning the Hardcore championship. He defended it against Matt Hardy, Tajiri, Kane, and Edge. RVD even renewed his rivalry with Jerry Lynn on an episode of Heat. Later, Austin motivated RVD to go after Kurt Angle. During the contest, Dreamer and Raven interfered, so Jeff Hardy came to stop them. Jeff hit the Swanton on RVD and pinned him to capture the Hardcore gold. While this happened, Angle put Dreamer in an anklelock. This led to RVD and Rhyno against Jeff Hardy and Chris Jericho. RVD smashed a ladder into Jeff’s face and won with the Five Star Frog Splash.

The Match: They begin with some chain wrestling until Jeff sends RVD outside for a springboard Whisper in the Wind. Then Jeff flies at RVD again, but RVD sidesteps him and Jeff crashes into the barricade. Now RVD nails a barricade leg drop and fetches the ladder. They see-saw the ladder into each other before Jeff places RVD on it and lands an Arabian Press. RVD answers by putting Jeff on the ladder and doing the Rolling Thunder.

After some climbing attempts, RVD hits a cartwheel moonsault. Next, they both miss their top rope finishers, but RVD scores a superplex off the ladder! Undaunted, Jeff fires back with a sunset bomb! With RVD down, Jeff reaches the prize, but he dangles from the hook when RVD moves the ladder. As Jeff hangs, RVD does a flying wheel kick, which misses. Finally, RVD topples the ladder and dumps Jeff onto the ropes. RVD collects the belt before Jeff can reach him.

Thoughts: Only the spot where Jeff was dangling from the hook was bad. Everything else was outstanding. These two have great chemistry and exciting movesets, so they create gold every time they fight.

Winner: RVD (New Champion) (16:33)

Shane McMahon gives Booker T a gift - WWE SummerSlam 2001

Backstage, Shane McMahon enters Booker’s locker room with a gift in his hand. He gloats about RVD’s win and says the same thing will happen in Booker’s contest. After he says this, Booker asks what’s in the box. Shane says it’s a present for Booker, but he needs to explain it. Booker opens the box to find a pair of bookends. Shane says they made them from the remnants of the announce table Booker put the Rock through. Booker says, “Tell me you didn’t just do that.” Then he hugs Shane and thanks him. Booker also dedicates his upcoming win to Shane, so Shane says, “Tell me you didn’t just dedicate your match to me.”

Meanwhile, Taker, Kane, and Sara walk down a hallway before they show a recap. Afterward, everyone arrives for the Brothers of Destruction vs. DDP & Kanyon in a cage. It’s another title for title bout. The Undertaker and Kane are the WCW tag champs, while DDP and Kanyon hold the WWF tag belts.

The Brothers of Destruction vs. DDP & Kanyon, Cage Match - WWE SummerSlam 2001

Cage Match for the WWF & WCW Tag Team Titles: The Brothers of Destruction (w/ Sara) vs. Diamond Dallas Page & Chris Kanyon

Storyline: Kanyon called himself the Alliance MVP because his team won at Invasion. This annoyed Stone Cold, but Booker T appreciated Kanyon. He gave him the US title as a gift! Meanwhile, DDP continued antagonizing the Undertaker. Page pulled Sara into Taker’s chair shot and built a Sara shrine backstage. He used the latter to lure Taker into an ambush by Kanyon. Page even tried to help the Dudleys put Sara through a table, but he failed. However, DDP successfully cost Kane a chance at the Hardcore belt. Later, DDP and Kanyon captured the WWF tag titles, but they weren’t the only ones. Palumbo and O’Haire issued an open challenge and got Taker and Kane. They beat Chuck and Sean to become WCW tag champs. Afterward, Taker and Kane faced Palumbo and O’Haire in a cage. DDP chased Sara up the cage to distract the brothers, but they still succeeded.

The Match: DDP and Kanyon immediately try to escape, but the brothers bring them back for strikes and big boots. Then DDP uses a low blow and rams Taker into the cage walls. While this happens, Kane catches a flying Kanyon and nails a chokeslam. Plus, Taker squashes DDP against the wall. Now DDP and Kanyon fire back. Kanyon gives Kane a super Rocker Dropper while DDP drops Taker with a DDT. With the brothers down, DDP and Kanyon climb, but Taker and Kane sit up! They chase them to the top of the cage and everyone fights. Kanyon climbs down, so Taker tells Kane to let him go. Chris takes the opening, which leaves DDP alone. When DDP calls for Kanyon to come back, Kanyon waves him off and walks away.

Taker finds a chain in a bag before climbing back down into the ring. Kane and Taker give DDP corner clotheslines before Taker wraps the chain around DDP’s neck and throws him. Next, Taker beats up Page while telling him to never mess with his wife again. He even pulls him up from a pin for more punishment. This elicits an apology from Page, so Taker tells him to get out of there and he’ll let him live. DDP climbs the cage, but Taker is lying. He chokeslams Page from the top rope and ends it with the Last Ride. Taker dedicates the move to Sara.

Thoughts: This was a glorified squash. I still don’t understand why they would take one of the few big WCW stars they had and job him out like this. The Alliance is already hurting for star power. Granted, the action got a good reaction from the crowd, but that doesn’t make it smart booking.

Winners: The Brothers of Destruction (Double Champions) (10:17)

The Rock talks to the Doc backstage - WWE SummerSlam 2001

Meanwhile, the Rock talks with the doc backstage. He says he already told him he was fine. It will take a hell of a lot more than a Rock Bottom through a table to stop the Rock! As he says this, Stasiak runs into the room while screaming. The Rock and the doctor sidestep him and Shawn slides across the table. They carry on their conversation as if nothing happened. The Rock says you are looking at the next WCW champion.

Kurt Angle vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin - WWE SummerSlam 2001

WWF Title Match: Kurt Angle vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin (c)

Storyline: Austin felt Vince didn’t appreciate him. Vince tried to groom Angle as the next WWF champ, so Austin joined the Alliance because they would appreciate him. Then Angle challenged Austin for the WWF title. Steve offered Kurt a match with Booker instead, and Angle won the WCW championship! However, Austin helped Booker win it back. Meanwhile, Austin and Debra argued about her awful cookies, so Debra whacked Steve with a cookie tray. Later, Lita told Debra she admired her actions, but Lita insulted Austin. Debra took offense, so she manipulated Austin into going after Matt Hardy. This led to Angle and the Hardys against Austin and the Dudleys, and Austin tried to break Kurt’s ankle. Next, Stone Cold held the first Austin Invitational. He hoped to lure Angle into a trap, but Austin got Scotty 2 Hotty. Austin beat up Scotty until Angle saved him.

The Match: They brawl in and out of the ring while exchanging strikes and eye pokes. Then Austin targets Kurt’s leg for a while. Kurt counters into an anklelock, but Austin earns a rope break. Now Austin does three suplexes, so Angle answers with rolling Germans. This leads to fighting on the top rope, and Austin performs a superplex after two tries. A Stunner follows, but it only garners a two! When Austin hits a second one, Kurt rolls to the floor. Unfortunately, Austin rams Kurt into the post until he’s a bloody mess. With Angle dazed, they fight into the crowd. Austin climbs over the barricade, but Angle puts him in an anklelock. He screams at Austin and tells him to tap until Hebner pulls him off Austin.

Kurt can’t succeed on the floor, so he brings Austin inside and reapplies the hold. Austin escapes, so Angle uses a belly-to-belly and lands his moonsault! Once Austin recovers, he locks Kurt in the Million Dollar Dream. Kurt pushes off the turnbuckles for a pin attempt and flings Austin through the ropes. When Austin returns, he hits another Stunner, but it still gets two! Plus, Kurt scores the Angle Slam and an anklelock. This spooks Austin, so he takes out referees to get disqualified. They go through three WWF officials until Nick Patrick arrives. While this happens, Kurt gives Austin an Angle Slam. Patrick almost counts, but he stops and disqualifies Austin.

Thoughts: I loved this. It was a good mix of brutality, storytelling, and drama. Also, this had some great visuals. I’m even fine with the ending because it sets up a rematch.

Winner: Kurt Angle (by DQ) (22:20)

Angle calls Nick Patrick a son of a bitch. He accuses Nick of screwing him, so Angle pulls Patrick into the ring and puts him in an anklelock. The outcome infuriates JR. He tells Kurt to break his damn ankle and he yells in Heyman’s face.

The Rock vs. Booker T - WWE SummerSlam 2001

WCW Title Match: The Rock vs. Booker T (c) (w/ Shane McMahon)

Storyline: Since Austin turned on the WWF, Vince reinstated the Rock. Then Vince and Shane tried to convince the Rock to pick a side. The Rock gave both men Rock Bottoms, but he chose the WWF. Afterward, Booker T challenged the Rock, but Rocky wondered who in the blue hell he was. This pissed off Shane, so Shane demanded a Street Fight with the Rock. The Rock won, but Booker helped Shane drive the Rock through the announce table. However, Rocky got revenge by giving Shane a Rock Bottom on the Smackdown announce table. Meanwhile, Booker wanted to prove he could act in Hollywood like the Rock, but he had a disastrous audition. Next, Booker attacked the Rock and performed a Book End on a chair. As a result, Rock asked for a Lights Out Match with Booker. Shane interfered and cost the Rock the victory.

The Match: Shane wastes no time before interfering, so Rock chases him. Then he whips Booker into Shane and lands a Samoan Drop. Rock even uses a magistral cradle after a strike exchange. Now they brawl around ringside and the announce tables. While this happens, Shane removes a turnbuckle pad. Back inside, Booker gains control and grounds the Rock with a chinlock and a kneeling surfboard. Once Rocky escapes, he answers with a Sharpshooter. Booker breaks free, but Rock reverses Booker into the exposed buckle. Sensing trouble, Shane intervenes and pays for it. This doesn’t stop him from introducing a chair. It’s a distraction so Shane can deck Rock with the belt. Thankfully, the APA has enough. They chase Shane and Bradshaw floors Shane with the Clothesline from Hell.

While the APA takes out Shane, Booker nails a Book End, which only gets two! Undeterred, Rock fires back with a jumping clothesline and a belly-to-belly throw. He continues with the spinebuster and the People’s Elbow, but Shane recovers and pulls the ref out of the ring. Shane won’t stay down, so Rock gives him a Rock Bottom on the floor. Unfortunately, Booker scores a spinebuster and an axe kick when the Rock returns. The problem is, Booker stops to do the Spinaroonie, so the Rock kips up. He grabs Booker and ends it with a Rock Bottom.

Thoughts: This was fun. It contained some bells, whistles, and shenanigans, but they kept it to a fine amount. Also, I liked the ending. This was a good way to send the fans home happy after the non-finish in Austin vs. Angle.

Winner: The Rock (New Champion) (15:18)

The WWF locker room celebrates the Rock’s win while Rocky collects his belt. JR says the WWF now controls the WCW championship, but Heyman reminds him the Alliance still has the WWF title.

The Good:

  • Rock vs. Booker

  • Austin vs. Angle

  • RVD vs. Jeff Hardy

  • X-Pac vs. Tajiri

The Bad:

  • Taker & Kane vs. DDP & Kanyon

Performer of the Night:

I’m giving it to Kurt Angle. I loved his intensity and his performance.

Final Thoughts:

SummerSlam was the WWF’s true return to form. This was the best PPV since Mania. Only the Cage Match was bad. Everything else ranged from decent to great. They needed this after a few mediocre PPVs. Plus, this event had some amusing moments. The Stasiak stuff made me laugh.

Thank you for reading. My next review is Unforgiven 2001. Look for it next Sunday!
