Royal Rumble

January 23, 2000

Madison Square Garden

New York City, New York

News & Notes: After Armageddon, Vince showed up to RAW with a sledgehammer. So Stephanie confronted her dad and told him the truth. She joined Triple H to get back at her father for everything he put her through. This broke Vince’s heart. He got in his limo and left, and we haven’t seen him since. With Vince gone, Hunter and Steph took over the show. They declared this the McMahon-Helmsley Era. Their reign of terror claimed many victims. Stephanie slapped Jim Ross and Hunter broke Test’s nose again. Then Hunter regained the WWF Title from Big Show. But they went too far when they booked Mankind vs. Santa in a Boiler Room Brawl. So Mankind led a mutiny and ended up in a Pink Slip on a Pole Match against The Rock. When The Rock won, Hunter fired Mankind. As for the rest, I’ll explain it in a bit.

Now for a rundown of other news. Gtv provided shocking footage. Mark Henry is sleeping with Mae Young! It wasn’t a one-night stand. They are in love. Mark even convinced Harvey Wippleman to double-date with Moolah. But these aren’t the only couples in the WWF. Edge got engaged to Val Venis’ sister, so Val helped Edge win a match. Plus, Gangrel and Luna revealed they are a couple and started working together. However, not everyone is happy. Kane lost a match to X-Pac with an unfortunate stipulation. Tori had to spend Christmas with X-Pac. When she returned, she claimed X-Pac was a perfect gentleman, but she acted strangely. Tori became spooked around other men. She told Kane to attack anyone who made her feel threatened.

Opening Video - Royal Rumble 2000

The opening video focuses on Cactus Jack and Triple H. They compare each other’s legacies. Cactus Jack is a scarred man who fought in barbed wire and explosives. Triple H is the WWF champion, and he crippled and maimed men his entire career. Some people say Cactus shoots from the hip. Hunter thinks he shoots his mouth off. As for Triple H, he calls himself the Game, but Cactus played the game before and won. Both men are sick and sadistic. However, Cactus calls himself the sickest man in the business. There will be no laughter, regret, or remorse.

Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler - Royal Rumble 2000

As the fireworks explode, we see the PPV set. A taxi cab hangs over an entrance door made from corrugated metal. Throughout the night, Lawler worries it will fall on people. Once the pyro ends, JR welcomes everyone to New York City. Tonight, 30 men will compete in the Royal Rumble, but what about the Street Fight for the WWF championship? Lawler says Cactus Jack is vicious, mean, and homicidal, but he’s going against The Game. Jerry predicts a Helmsley victory.

Then Kurt Angle arrives for an encounter with a mystery opponent. He offers to be New York’s champion for one night. After all, he says Patrick Ewing and the Nicks won’t win any time soon. And as for his unnamed opponent, he must be nervous about facing an undefeated American hero. So Kurt tells him to remember his three Is and give it his all. With that said, the strange symbol that appeared on TV for weeks flashes onto the screen. A heartbeat plays, and out comes—Tazz! (They added the extra Z so they could trademark the name.)

Tazz vs. Kurt Angle - Royal Rumble 2000

Tazz vs. Kurt Angle

Storyline: After Armageddon, a symbol appeared on the Titantron during wrestlers’ entrances. The lights turned orange and a faint voice said the words survive and the mood is about to change. This baffled the superstars and commentators. Meanwhile, Kurt Angle continued his winning ways, which drew Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley’s attention. She told Hunter she found Kurt cute. So Triple H vowed to end Angle’s winning streak. But every time he booked Kurt in a match, Stephanie intervened. She told Steve Blackman to help Kurt win. This led to Angle and Blackman teaming again, but it ended as poorly as the first time. When that failed, Bulldog helped Angle next. However, he also couldn’t cut it as Kurt’s partner. To make matters worse, they announced Kurt would face a mystery opponent at the Rumble.

The Match: Tazz backdrops Angle over the ropes and they fight on the floor. There, Tazz reverses a suplex and rolls Kurt into the ring. Then Tazz nails a shoulder block and overhead belly-to-belly. This leads to fighting on the top rope, which goes in Tazz’s favor. He lands a release superplex and covers, but Kurt gets a foot on the ropes. When Tazz complains to the ref, Angle kicks Tazz and hooks an inside cradle. He follows with a German suplex. Next, Kurt attempts the Olympic Slam, but Tazz drops behind him. After a t-bone suplex, Tazz grabs the Tazmission, and Kurt passes out.

Thoughts: This was short and to the point. They told the story they needed to tell, and it got a great reaction from the crowd. Plus, the finish gives Kurt Angle another excuse to claim he is undefeated. (You will understand what I mean later.) Now I want to address the longstanding rumor. Apparently, Tazz almost dropped Kurt on his head, which infuriated Vince. I didn’t see that. The suplexes they used looked fine to me. They’re no worse than Lesnar’s suplexes nowadays. In fact, I saw more dangerous-looking suplexes from Bubba Ray Dudley on the RAWs before this PPV than anything Tazz did. Yet you don’t hear about him having heat. It feels like some people backstage were looking for a reason to dislike Tazz.

Winner: Tazz (3:16)

Angle is unconscious, so the officials and EMTs rush to the ring. While they load Kurt onto a stretcher, Lawler says he thinks Tazz used an illegal choke hold. The replay convinces King this is the case. He says Angle is still undefeated because choking is against the rules.

The Hardy Boyz and Terri - Royal Rumble 2000

Next, Cole interviews the Hardy Boyz and Terri. They will face the Dudley Boyz in the first Tag Team Tables Match. While Cole says this, they show replays of the table antics between the two teams. Michael asks if they are ready for a war, but Terri answers for them. She says they will tear the roof off the building. So Jeff tells her no. It is too dangerous. She has to stay in the back. Then Matt says they weren’t even supposed to be in the WWF, but they are. Now they will put the Dudleys through tables or die trying. (It wasn’t a great promo. They still need to work on those skills.)

After the interview, JR gets snarky with Lawler because King forgot to read the ad for 1-800-Collect. He asks if King wants to earn his keep. This leads to the Dudleys’ entrance. D-Von calls the New York fans ass-backward for booing a baseball pitcher named John Rocker. He says they should elect him mayor instead. Also, Bubba tells the Hardys to stick their heads between their legs and kiss their asses goodbye.

The Hardy Boyz vs. The Dudley Boyz Tables Match - Royal Rumble 2000

Tag Team Tables Match: The Hardy Boyz vs. The Dudley Boyz

Storyline: Triple H and Stephanie sought to eliminate the Outlaws’ competition. So they booked the Hardys and Edge & Christian in dangerous matches. Plus, they made brothers fight brothers and pitted partner against partner. As a result, Matt Hardy suffered a broken nose and cheekbone. But this gave Jeff Hardy a chance to shine. However, one team escaped Hunter and Stephanie’s wrath. The Dudleys helped the McMahon-Helmsley regime deal with the Rock & Sock Connection. They also got on the bad sides of Mark Henry and Godfather by threatening Mae Young and the hoes. Then the Hardys and Dudleys competed against each other in singles matches. Bubba put Jeff Hardy through a table, so the Hardys returned the favor. When the Dudleys set up tables beside the stage, Jeff knocked Bubba onto one. And Matt drove D-Von through the other with a leg drop.

The Match: Everyone brawls and grabs tables. Matt saves Jeff by moving the table, and Jeff hits a somersault plancha onto D-Von. While outside, Jeff runs the rail, so Bubba throws a table at his face! Next, D-Von saves Bubba before the Hardys introduce ladders and chairs into the mix. The Hardys dive off the ladders to take out Bubba on a table. Later, the Hardys crash through tables on missed dives. But it doesn’t count if you put yourself through it. However, Bubba superbombs Matt on a table. Afterward, they head to the exit door and create a stack of tables. Bubba falls onto some of them. This allows Jeff to do a Swanton Bomb from the balcony! It eliminates D-Von for the win.

Thoughts: This was great. Not only was it exciting, it also had some great visuals. The shot of Jeff Hardy about to do the Swanton Bomb is iconic. There were some dangerous spots, but they executed them about as well as possible. This is a testament to how these teams gel together. And we’re just getting started with them.

Winners: The Hardy Boyz (10:17)

Kurt Angle Backstage - Royal Rumble 2000

Backstage, an EMT shines a light into Angle’s eyes. Kurt asks what happened. Did he win? The EMT says he only knows Tazz choked him unconscious. When Angle hears this, he says that’s illegal. He can’t do that. If Tazz choked him, Angle is still undefeated. The EMT doesn’t care. He’s trying to help Angle, but Lawler agrees with Kurt.

Next, the Fink introduces our judges for the Miss Rumble 2000 Swimsuit Contest. They are Sgt. Slaughter, Tony Garea, the Fabulous Moolah, Johnny Valiant, Freddie Blassie, and Andy Richter from Conan O’Brien. Plus, Lawler is the master of ceremonies. King tells Andy Richter to control himself.

Participants: Ivory, Terri, Jacqueline, B.B., Luna, & The Kat.

Miss Rumble 2000 Swimsuit Contest - Royal Rumble 2000

Miss Rumble 2000 Swimsuit Contest

Storyline: Since Miss Kitty won the Women’s Title, she changed her name. Now she wants people to call her The Kat. Then she faced Tori in a vat of pudding, and she pulled Lilian Garcia into it. Later, Triple H created the first-ever Topless Top Rope Challenge. BB and Terri were in the corners of Val Venis and Hardcore Holly. When the men threw each other over the ropes, their representative had to remove an article of clothing. These antics infuriated Ivory. She said this wasn’t the smut division. Ivory wanted to wrestle. Therefore, Hunter and Stephanie booked the women in intergender tag matches. Later, they announced this swimsuit contest, and named Lawler as the host. So Ivory called him a pervert. Also, the ladies heard Edge might be a judge, so they all swarmed him. As chaos erupted, Mae Young tried to show her puppies, but Mark stopped her.

The Match: Ivory is first, and she looks furious, but she removes her jacket to reveal a thong bikini. Then she stands with her arms folded and calls Lawler a pervert. Next, Terri reveals her skimpy one-piece number. She even leans over to give Andy a show. Afterward, Jackie disrobes and twerks. B.B. follows her, so JR says size matters. Once B.B. finishes, it’s Luna’s turn, but she refuses to participate. So The Kat reveals her swimsuit made of bubble wrap! King wants to pop it. Then King asks for the judges’ decision, but Mae Young’s music plays! Mae says her fans want to see her puppies. Lawler tries in vain to stop her while Mae does a suggestive dance with her scarf. Plus, Mae unzips her top and flashes Lawler. He screams in horror, as Mae exposes herself, but Mark Henry covers her with a jacket.

Once he recovers, Jerry collects the judges’ scorecards. Lawler reacts with shock because the judges chose Mae Young!

Thoughts: The Mae Young stuff was amusing, and the rest was what it was. At least the Women’s Title wasn’t on the line this time. So this was silliness to give the fans a rest after the intense Tables Match. (On a side note, they didn’t censor Mae on the broadcast. However, they used prosthetic breasts. The home video release and the network put a censor bar over her.)

Winner: Mae Young

Jonathan Coachman at WWF New York - Royal Rumble 2000

Afterward, they go to the WWF’s new restaurant in Times Square. It’s called WWF New York, and the WWF’s newest colleague is there. This is the PPV debut of Jonathan “Coach” Coachman. (Yes, he already had a run-in with The Rock on Smackdown. This went as you expected, so it begins!) The rowdy fans swarm Coach while he talks about the venue. Jonathan calls it the most exciting place to be.

Chris Jericho and Chyna - Royal Rumble 2000

Meanwhile, Chyna and Jericho argue backstage. They both want to wear the Intercontinental belt. Chyna tells Jericho to be chivalrous for once in his life. As they bicker, Dave Hebner grabs the title and takes it to the ring. He says they will find out who is the undisputed champion in a moment.

Then they show an ad telling children not to do wrestling moves at home. Lawler implores no one to do what Mae Young did anywhere. As they talk, Jericho arrives. He welcomes everyone to Madison Square Jericho. Plus, he promises a victory celebration. The party will make Times Square look like his sister’s seventh birthday party.

Chris Jericho vs. Hardcore Holly vs. Chyna - Royal Rumble 2000

Triple Threat Match for the Undisputed Intercontinental Title: Chris Jericho (c) vs. Chyna (c) vs. Hardcore Holly

Storyline: Chyna helped Jericho win matches after Armageddon, which confused Chris. He thought Chyna had a crush on him, but this wasn’t the case. Chyna revealed she was keeping the belt on Chris until her thumb healed. Then she demanded her rematch. The bout ended with a controversial double-pin, so Stephanie named Jericho and Chyna as co-champions! Now they had to take turns defending the gold. However, Hardcore Holly took exception to Chyna costing him a chance at the championship. This led to Chyna & Jericho fighting the Hollys twice. Hardcore pinned both of them and asked for a title shot. Since Jericho and Chyna couldn’t agree, they made it a Triple Threat. Later, Holly prevented Rikishi from winning the belt. So Chyna, Jericho, and Hardcore fought Too Cool and Rikishi. Jericho walked away and let Chyna take a Rikishi Drop.

The Match: Everyone exchanges strikes, and Chyna stops a Walls of Jericho attempt on Holly. Next, Chyna sends Holly over the ropes and they scuffle. So Jericho nails a triangle jump plancha. Back inside, Chyna does a handspring elbow and DDT to Jericho, but Holly breaks up the pin. Afterward, they tumble outside again. This time, Holly grabs a chair, but Jericho stops him from hitting Chyna. Plus, Chyna dropkicks the chair into Holly’s face. Later, Chyna scores a Pedigree, but it isn’t enough. So Holly lifts Chyna onto his shoulders, and Jericho knocks them down with a crossbody. This leads to a Jericho superplex on Holly, but Bob hooks the legs for a two count. As Chris and Bob fight, Chyna uses a chair on Holly and puts him in the Walls! However, Jericho breaks it with a facebuster on Chyna. He then pins Chyna after a Lionsault.

Thoughts: This was a solid bout. It wasn’t overly thrilling, but it was enjoyable. Plus, I liked the closing moments. Chyna using Jericho’s hold and paying for it was a nice touch. Also, it’s nice to see Jericho shine after his rough start in the WWF. This begins a good run for him.

Winner: Chris Jericho (Undisputed Champion) (7:30)

The Rock and Michael Cole - Royal Rumble 2000

Cole interviews The Rock, but Rocky stops him to say he has finally come back to New York. Once he’s done, Cole says Rock has a bullseye on his chest. Is there anyone in the Rumble who concerns him? Rocky says there are two people who worry him. One is Crash Holly, and the other is Headbanger Mosh. This amuses Cole. He says, “With all due respect, Rock, shouldn’t you worry about the Big Show?” After Cole says this, Rocky tells Michael to fix himself a tall glass of shut up juice! He then shoves Cole away and addresses Big Show. Rock asks if Big Show thinks he will eliminate the Great One. If so, The Rock wipes a monkey’s ass with what Big Show thinks! He hopes they are in the ring together at the end. Because Rocky guaran-damn-tees a victory. If you smell what The Rock is cooking!

The Acolytes vs. The New Age Outlaws - Royal Rumble 2000

Tag Team Title Match: The New Age Outlaws (c) vs. The Acolytes

Storyline: The Outlaws knew they had to face the Acolytes at the Rumble, but they had other worries. Problems arose within DX because of Hunter & Stephanie’s power trip. So Hunter showed them tough love. He made Gunn fight the Acolytes, and Road Dogg faced Kane. Plus, Dogg and Gunn fought each other. Meanwhile, the Acolytes dealt with the Mean Street Posse. The Posse wanted to get on Hunter & Steph’s good side, but they failed. Later, DX patched their differences, and Hunter made amends with the Outlaws. He let the Outlaws take on both Acolytes in separate handicap matches. If Faarooq or Bradshaw helped each other, they lost their title shot. The Outlaws won, which led to altercations with the Acolytes. This included a bar fight at the Friendly Tap. Some patrons helped the Outlaws, so Dogg and Gunn escaped out the door and ran for their lives.

The Match: Everyone brawls until Bradshaw catches Gunn and hits a fallaway slam. Next, Faarooq powerslams Dogg and almost gives him the Dominator. So Gunn stops it, and Road Dogg does Shake, Rattle, & Roll to Faarooq. However, Bradshaw pulls Dogg down by the hair when he tries a shaky knee drop. This causes another brawl, and Bradshaw nails Gunn with the Clothesline from Hell. Unfortunately, they wipe out the ref in the ensuing chaos. Afterward, the Acolytes land a double-team powerbomb, but X-Pac runs to the ring. He floors Bradshaw with a wheel kick, so Faarooq deals with X-Pac. While this happens, Gunn drops Bradshaw with a Fameasser for the victory.

Thoughts: What we got wasn’t bad, but this was too short. Did another match go too long? It felt like they had to cut time off this one. If it was longer, I’d call it good. But the length made this disappointing.

Winners: The New Age Outlaws (2:35)

Now it’s time for the WWF Title match. Triple H brings Stephanie with him, so JR wonders if this is a safe environment for her. He promises this won’t be for the faint of heart. Cactus said he wouldn’t even let his own children watch this, unlike last year. It seems Stephanie agrees because she wishes Hunter luck and leaves. Afterward, Cactus arrives. He goes face-to-face with Hunter and says something we can’t hear. Whatever it is, the words spook Triple H.

Cactus Jack vs. Triple H - Royal Rumble 2000

Street Fight for the WWF Title: Triple H (c) vs. Cactus Jack

Storyline: After firing Mankind, Triple H mocked him with a movie called Have a Bad Day. It starred a fake Mankind who acted pathetic and weak. The Rock had enough. He staged a walk-out with the rest of the roster. They threatened to quit if Hunter didn’t meet their demands. He had to reinstate Foley, and they couldn’t fire people for no reason anymore. Plus, Mankind demanded a WWF Title shot. Hunter agreed under duress. Later, Mick tortured the fake Mankind for mocking him. Afterward, the Acolytes and Rock & Sock fought DX. During the bout, Hunter bloodied Mankind with the ring bell. Then, on Smackdown, Hunter made it a Street Fight. Mankind said he wasn’t ready for such a match. However, he offered a substitute. Mick removed his mask and opened his shirt to reveal Cactus Jack was back! Cactus vowed to bring sharp metallic weapons to the Rumble.

The Match: They brawl in and out of the ring. Plus, they use the steps, the announce tables, and even the ring bell. After a brief foray into the crowd, they end up at the entrance set. Cactus suplexes Hunter on some pallets. A chunk of wood stabs Hunter in the calf. Next, they return to the ring, and Cactus grabs a 2×4 wrapped in barbed wire! Hebner tries to take the board and hide it under the Spanish announce table. However, Jack retrieves it and bloodies Triple H. Next, they fight on the announce table, and Helmsley backdrops Cactus. He follows with a chop block and takes control.

Now Hunter uses the barbed wire board on Cactus’ leg. Once he’s down, Hunter handcuffs Jack’s hands behind his back and tries to recreate last year’s carnage. But Cactus lures him to the entrance, where The Rock clocks Hunter with a chair! This allows cops to free Cactus’ hands. Once the cuffs are gone, Jack piledrives Hunter on the announce table. With Hunter down, Cactus grabs his bag of thumbtacks! He covers the mat in them and tries to knock Triple H down. But he fails. Hunter backdrops Jack on the tacks and nails the Pedigree. It isn’t enough! A shocked Helmsley argues with the ref before giving Jack a second Pedigree into the tacks. This earns him the three.

Thoughts: This was amazing. I’ve seen it multiple times, and it’s still one of my favorite matches from both men. It’s the perfect blend of storytelling and brutality. Plus, it was so good I didn’t even mind the length. They almost went for almost thirty minutes. (On a side note, the kick out after the Pedigree legitimately surprised Hunter. It was the original finish, but Cactus called an audible. He wanted to end with a Pedigree in the thumbtacks, and it was the right call.)

Winner: Triple H (26:55)

A concerned Stephanie watches as they load Hunter onto a stretcher, but Cactus isn’t done. He wheels Triple H back to the ring and dumps him off the gurney. Then Jack gives Hunter one more whack with the 2×4 while Stephanie watches in horror.

Jonathan Coachman and Linda McMahon - Royal Rumble 2000

Back at WWF New York, Coach says the fans are in awe of the last match. With that said, he welcomes the WWF’s CEO, Linda McMahon. Coachman asks her what she thinks of Stephanie’s recent behavior. Linda says she can’t comment on it, but rest assured, they will handle things the McMahon way.

Now it’s time for the Royal Rumble Match. While they clean the ring, Fink explains the rules. They even show a clip from 1995 to explain the Shawn Michaels rule. Once he’s done, we see the first entrant. It’s D’Lo Brown, so Lawler asks which poor schmuck drew number two. To Jerry’s dismay, it’s Grandmaster Sexay.

The Royal Rumble Match - Royal Rumble 2000

30-Man Royal Rumble Match

Storyline: After Armageddon, The Rock got revenge on Al Snow, which sent Snow on a downward spiral. Then, when Mankind received his title shot, Rock entered the Rumble. He vowed to throw 29 other jabronis over the top rope. This didn’t sit well with Big Show. First, he didn’t get a WWF Title rematch. Plus, The Rock called him a jabroni. Big Show said he didn’t like The Rock, but he had to team with him twice. So Big Show abandoned Rocky the first time. When they teamed again, Rock and Big Show brawled. But they aren’t the only ones looking to win. Rikishi came close to beating Triple H after getting a shot from a random drawing. He would like another opportunity. Meanwhile, X-Pac defeated Test to earn the number 30 spot. Also, Kane won an Over the Top Rope Challenge against Rock and Big Show.

The Match: 1. D’Lo Brown, 2. Grandmaster Sexay, 3. Mosh, 4. Christian, 5. Rikishi, 6. Scotty 2 Hotty, 7. Steve Blackman, 8. Viscera, 9. Big Boss Man, 10. Test.

While everyone fights, Kaientai tries to crash the party. Taka and Funaki are mad because they cut them from the Rumble. But the competitors toss them out. Once Rikishi arrives, he cleans house until it’s only him and Grandmaster. It looks like they’re going to fight, but Scotty is next. He convinces Rikishi to do a dance break. Rikishi obliges, but he still eliminates Too Cool. However, there are no hard feelings. Afterward, we get a hoss battle between Viscera and Rikishi, which Rikishi wins. As Rikishi continues dominating, Boss Man enters, but he waits outside the ring. This doesn’t last because Test attacks him.

11. British Bulldog, 12. Gangrel, 13. Edge, 14. Bob Backlund, 15. Chris Jericho, 16. Crash Holly, 17. Chyna, 18. Faarooq, 19. Road Dogg, 20. Al Snow.

Kaientai returns for more, but the wrestlers throw them out again. This time, Taka face-plants on the floor, so that’s all for him. Lawler finds it hilarious. The hilarity continues when Bob Backlund makes a brief appearance. He leaves through the crowd after they eliminate him. Meanwhile, everyone gangs up to dump Rikishi from the ring. Also, Chyna and Jericho scuffle, which leads to both of them exiting the bout. And the Mean Street Posse ambushes Faarooq to cause his elimination.

21. Val Venis, 22. Prince Albert, 23. Hardcore Holly, 24. The Rock, 25. Mr. Ass, 26. The Big Show, 27. Bradshaw, 28. Kane, 29. Godfather, 30. X-Pac.

When Funaki returns again, Lawler wants another replay of Taka’s face-plant. Jerry thinks they’re Chinese, so JR corrects him. Meanwhile, Road Dogg discovers a new tactic. He holds onto the bottom rope for dear life. As this happens, Rock and Big Show arrive. Everyone goes after Rocky. Plus, the Mean Street Posse comes back to help get rid of Bradshaw. It causes a brawl between the Posse and Acolytes. The chaos allows X-Pac to return, despite getting tossed.

Final Four: The Rock, The Big Show, Kane, & X-Pac.

While X-Pac fights with The Rock, Big Show and Kane try to chokeslam each other. Kane breaks free and nails an enziguri, but X-Pac sends Kane over the ropes with a wheel kick. He also gives Big Show the Bronco Buster. It pisses him off, and Show press slams X-Pac to the floor. This leaves Rock and Big Show. Rocky scores a spinebuster and People’s Elbow. Then he looks to throw Show out of the ring, but Show blocks it and lands a chokeslam! Now Big Show wants to toss Rocky. He lifts him onto his shoulders and runs toward the ropes. They both tumble over, but Rock hooks the ropes and saves himself at the last second.

Thoughts: This was a pretty fun Rumble. The outcome was a foregone conclusion, but the fans didn’t care. They wanted The Rock to win. Plus, they filled this with enough amusing moments and storyline developments to make it good. Besides, the finish isn’t as cut-and-dry as it seems. They build some controversy about the ending over the next few weeks. But I’ll discuss that in my No Way Out review.

Winner: The Rock (51:48)

JR says this has to be the sweetest victory in MSG for The Rock. He will meet the WWF champion at WrestleMania 2000. As they show a replay, JR says Rock’s feet didn’t touch the floor, and that’s the key. (Keep this in mind for later.) After the replay, Rock says he’s finally going back to WrestleMania. However, the Big Show returns and attacks Rocky. Show throws The Rock over the ropes and glares at him. So the fans chant asshole at Big Show. JR says the war isn’t over between them.

The Good:

  • Cactus/Triple H was amazing.

  • The Rumble was fun.

  • The Tables Match was great.

The Bad:

  • The Tag Title bout was a little disappointing.

Observations:

  • During the build for this PPV, the WWF debuted the black variant of their ring ropes. But they did this on a random episode of Heat. I always thought they first used it on a PPV.

  • Lawler kept calling Kaientai Chinese. Yet on TV, he was the one correcting people when the Mean Street Posse made the same mistake. It seems the WWF forgot their own joke.

Performer of the Night:

This is a difficult one because there are numerous choices. With that said, I’m giving it to Mick Foley for his incredible performance. Plus, his audible at the end of the match was a great idea.

Final Thoughts:

This is one of my all-time favorite PPVs. It is an almost flawless event. Even the things that fell short of expectations weren’t bad. I give this show the highest recommendation. And I’m sure I’ll say this a lot because the WWF is on fire in 2000. Creatively, it’s one of their strongest years.

Thank you for reading. My next review is WCW’s SuperBrawl 2000. Look for it next Sunday.
