Backlash

April 25, 1999

Providence Civic Center

Providence, Rhode Island

News & Notes: After WrestleMania, Vince brought his daughter Stephanie to RAW. He wanted to keep a close eye on her, but it backfired. The Ministry kidnapped Steph and locked her in the basement. Ken Shamrock discovered her location by beating up Christian. He then rescued her. As a result, Vince grew more worried. He focused on his daughter instead of Austin, which irked Shane McMahon. Shane accused his father of losing his focus. So Shane rebuked his dad and took control of the Corporation. Shane said Vince wasn’t his father anymore. He was just Vince to him. Shamrock stood up for Vince, which resulted in Shane removing him from the group. Meanwhile, we learned more about Stephanie through interviews. Mideon tried to interrupt one of these, so Vince stormed after him in a rage. (You’ve probably seen the clip.)

Here’s a rundown of the other news. Shane retired the European Title after his victory. Later, Shane and the Corporation pushed Test to the limit of his patience. Triple H and Boss Man treated him with disrespect and threw him to the wolves. But Test remained with the group for now. Elsewhere, Sable made Nicole Bass her bodyguard. However, Bass has other things on her mind. Val Venis drew her desire, so she chased him backstage. Next, we have two debuts. Boss Man ripped out Droz’s nose ring during a bout. This led to Droz introducing his tattoo artist, Prince Albert. They pierce and tattoo their opponents after matches. Also, PMS added a young Shawn Stasiak to their crew. He’s their boy toy. We will later learn they call him Meat. Finally, I have sad news. Rick Rude passed away before this PPV. They paid tribute to him on Heat.

Opening Video - Backlash 1999

Tonight, there is an epic encounter between divergent superstars. One is a defiant world champion. The other is the arrogant and refined so-called people’s champ. But nothing of consequence is black and white. These two are more similar than not. They are full of youth and charisma. The Rock and Austin are supernovas in a galaxy of stars! They are heirs to a single throne. These are knights courting the fair princess. Two men deserve what only one can have. The fearless warriors sacrificed their bodies and gutted their souls! It was all for the fleeting light of fame. But one man can raise the coveted grail. There can be only one! It’s Backlash!

Commentators - Backlash 1999

Jim Ross welcomes everyone to an emotionally charged night. He says Shane McMahon dropped a bomb on Heat. Shane made the WWF Title match a No Holds Barred contest. However, he will award the belt to the Rock if Stone Cold lays a hand on him. Lawler likes this. He is sick of things going Stone Cold’s way. Austin has a big job in front of him.

The Brood vs. The Ministry - Backlash 1999

The Acolytes & Mideon vs. The Brood

Notes: When the Undertaker kidnapped Stephanie, Shamrock attacked Christian to get her location. He put Christian in the anklelock and forced him to talk. Not even a bloodbath could stop Shamrock. This angered Taker. He punished Christian and the Brood. Taker flogged Christian and made him wrestle the Big Show alone. Then Taker ordered the Brood to strap Christian to his symbol. The Brood had enough. They retaliated and left the Ministry. So Taker told Viscera, Mideon, and the Acolytes to attack them multiple times.

The Match: The Brood takes control early. But the Acolytes catch them with a fallaway slam and a spinebuster. Next, the Brood uses double-teaming, which fails. This opens the door for Mideon’s stalling suplex on Edge. Afterward, Edge does a sunset flip only for Bradshaw to break it up. So the Ministry distracts the ref and attacks Edge. Back inside, Bradshaw hits a shoulder tackle and an STO. More ref distractions follow and Mideon throws a low blow. Eventually, Edge rallies with a diving spear. It leads to Christian’s tag. He cleans house with DDTs, a backdrop, and vaulting crossbodies. Then the Brood does stereo corner punches, but Bradshaw turns one into a powerbomb. Everyone brawls until Edge nails a missile dropkick. Christian also lands a slingshot crossbody. However, Viscera appears. He splashes Christian and rolls him into the ring for a Clothesline from Hell. It scores the win.

Thoughts: It was basic and dull until the finish. The action wasn’t bad, but it never built to anything exciting. This isn’t the hot opener you want for a PPV. Perhaps they should have started with the next match instead.

Winners: The Acolytes & Mideon (11:38)

Afterward, we see the Rock arrive at the arena. He drags Austin’s Smoking Skull belt across the floor. JR calls it disrespectful, but Lawler laughs.

Al Snow Recap - Backlash 1999

Then they recap the Hardcore Holly/Al Snow feud. They show clips of their river fight and various other brawls. Snow attacked Holly with Head and left him lying. Lawler says they battled each other every week. However, there is no sign of Dr. Death, who was also in this rivalry.

This leads to their entrances. JR discusses Snow’s obsession with winning the Hardcore Title for some insane reason. Lawler agrees about Snow’s lack of sanity. He calls Al a waste of oxygen, but Lawler likes Holly as the Hardcore Champ. As Lawler says this, Holly decks Snow with the Hardcore belt. It busts Snow open before the bell rings.

Al Snow vs. Hardcore Holly - Backlash 1999

Hardcore Title Match: Al Snow (w/ Head) vs. Hardcore Holly (c)

Notes: The original plan was Holly vs. Snow vs. Dr. Death. However, Steve Williams suffered an injury, and the WWF released him. This started when Williams wrestled Holly for the Hardcore Title. Al Snow attacked Dr. Death to give Holly the win. So Williams returned the favor when Snow and Holly faced each other. He suplexed both men. Since they had a common enemy, Snow and Holly had each other’s backs. Snow saved Holly from a table spot when Holly fought D’Lo. But the teamwork ended once Williams was out of the picture. Snow jumped Holly during Holly’s encounter with the Godfather. He knocked Bob out with Head.

The Match: They spill to the floor and use a water jug as a weapon. It leads to barricade spots before Snow breaks a hockey stick over Holly’s back. Soon, they head backstage. Holly rams Al into a Zamboni and picks up a sink. But Snow stops him with a water hose, and they fight around some cars. Next, the action heads up the stairs and into a trash-filled dumpster. They even scuffle into the production truck. When they exit, Snow hip tosses Bob onto the roof of a car! Afterward, they return to the ring. Snow decks Holly with a pan, but he stops his pin when he spots a table. Al’s plan fails, and Holly puts him through the plunder with a superplex. Both men struggle to their feet before Al crawls to Head. Al smacks Holly with it and pins him by placing Head on Holly’s chest.

Thoughts: Even though their last meeting was better, this one had fun moments. But this worked more for the home audience than the live crowd. The people in the arena became restless when they went outside. However, they liked the finish. Either way, I found it enjoyable. On a side note, is it advisable to fight in a dumpster? That’s a staph infection waiting to happen.

Winner: Al Snow (New Champion) (15:27)

Next, they show Austin enter the building. Lawler sounds worried, but nothing happens. Afterward, JR and King talk about the upcoming Godfather vs. Goldust encounter. Lawler heard the Godfather brought some nice hoes.

The Ministry of Darkness - Backlash 1999

Then the Ministry meets backstage. The Acolytes and Mideon impressed and pleased the Undertaker. He forgives their recent stumbles, but he says he won’t forget them. Taker also claims they must prepare for the hower power. (Did he mean higher power?) Their calamity begins when he arrives! But tonight will bring tragedy. JR wonders what he means.

In the meantime, Goldust and the Blue Meanie arrive for the next bout. JR talks about their unique relationship. He says the Meanie hero-worships Goldust and calls him Mommy. Then Meanie mocks Sable’s shtick. He does The Grind for the men who want to be him and the girls who came to see him. Lawler is thankful for the Godfather’s entrance after that nonsense. However, the Godfather teases the crowd by appearing alone. After a pause, Godfather waves for his ladies, and they join him. Once they enter the ring, Godfather does his catchphrases and addresses Goldust. He won’t offer Goldust any ladies because his girls don’t like no scrubs!

The Godfather vs. Goldust - Backlash 1999

Intercontinental Title Match: The Godfather (c) (w/ The Hoes) vs. Goldust (w/ The Blue Meanie)

Notes: After WrestleMania, Goldust defeated Road Dogg to win the Intercontinental gold. The Blue Meanie helped him. Then Goldust defended against the Godfather, who offered him his ladies. However, Goldust made things weird, so Godfather attacked him. The contest ended with no winner because the Meanie argued with Godfather’s hoes. Next, they booked Goldust vs. Boss Man, but Godfather had unfinished business. He bribed Boss Man with the women and took his spot. The Godfather beat Goldust for the belt! Afterward, Godfather faced Hardcore Holly, so Goldust interrupted it.

The Match: Goldust jumps him, but Godfather hits backdrops and clotheslines. When he sends Goldust outside, Goldust regroups and walks away. But he returns when Meanie reminds him about the title. Next, Godfather nails a leg drop. However, the Meanie trips him and Goldust takes control. Goldust distracts the ref while Meanie interferes. Then Meanie gives Goldust powder, but Godfather knocks it into Goldust’s face! The Meanie enters the ring to help only for a blinded Goldust to attack him! The Godfather watches as Goldust puts Meanie in the corner for Shattered Dreams. Once he finishes, Godfather floors Goldust with a heel kick. Meanie tries to stop the pin with a splash and strikes Goldust by mistake! So Godfather dispatches Meanie with a Ho Train and plants Goldust with a Death Valley Driver. It earns Godfather the three.

Thoughts: This wasn’t great, but it was amusing enough to be enjoyable. I’m fine with a fun match to break the monotony. It was a nice comedown after the hardcore bout. This served its purpose because the fans liked it. The only downside is they put the IC championship in a comedy segment. They made it seem less serious.

Winner: The Godfather (5:22)

The ladies mob the Godfather in celebration. Lawler wants to join him. Jerry also claims he wants to be the Godfather when he grows up.

Al Snow and Head - Backlash 1999

Then Cole interviews Al Snow in the bathroom. He congratulates Al on his big win, but Head interrupts Snow’s response. Apparently, Head believes he is the Hardcore Champion. Al’s one-sided conversation reveals he pinned Holly with Head. Therefore, Head says he won the belt. A confused Michael Cole watches in silence, so Snow tells him to leave. This is a private talk!

Next, the Outlaws arrive for their bout. Road Dogg does his spiel, and the word shiznit confuses JR. Once he finishes, Jarrett, Owen, and Debra join them. Debra’s black bikini excites Road Dogg and Lawler. Dogg wants to see the puppies, but Jarrett rains on the parade. So Road Dogg accuses Jeff of controlling Debra. He says she’s an adult who can decide for herself. Since Road Dogg can’t get his wish, he tells Gunn to moon the crowd instead. Jarrett and Owen jump them before he can.

New Age Outlaws vs. Jarrett and Owen - Backlash 1999

Tag Team Contender Match: The New Age Outlaws vs. Jeff Jarrett & Owen Hart (w/ Debra)

Notes: Jarrett and Owen once again demanded more competition, so Kane answered their call. He faced them in a handicap fight, but Jarrett used his guitar for a DQ. Since Kane helped him, X-Pac returned the favor and teamed with Kane. They beat Jarrett and Owen for the tag titles! X-Pac and Kane agreed to a rematch, but the Outlaws also asked for a shot. So they booked a three-way. Kane & X-Pac prevailed, and the Outlaws congratulated them. But Jarrett and Owen weren’t happy. They jumped the Outlaws multiple times. It led to singles bouts between them. Road Dogg offered them a chance to become Contenders. In return, he wanted Debra to show her puppies. Jarrett had none of that. He prevented Debra from stripping.

The Match: Everyone brawls until the Outlaws gain control with arm wringers. Then Road Dogg fends off a rally by Jarrett and Owen. He follows with the Shake, Rattle, & Roll, and a shaky knee drop. However, Jarrett and Owen take over with a cheap shot, enziguri, and double-teaming. Dogg scores desperation pin attempts, but they aren’t enough. Jarrett and Owen continue with attacks from the apron, a powerslam, and a wheel kick. Next, Owen and Dogg trade sleeper holds before going down to a collision. It leads to Gunn’s hot tag. He cleans house with dropkicks and a powerslam. This causes a wild brawl, and Debra provides a distraction. It almost works until Road Dogg gives Owen a pumphandle slam. After more scuffling, Jarrett and Owen try a Sharpshooter and a Figure Four. Gunn fights off Jarrett and nails Owen with the Fameasser for the victory.

Thoughts: It was a solid and fun match. Plus, I liked the ending. They kept the crowd’s attention and had a strong finish. But it’s all for naught. In retrospect, I wish Jarrett and Owen won. If they put them in a tag program for the next PPV, history would be different. Furthermore, the Outlaws go in a different direction before Over the Edge. So they could have given Jarrett and Owen the win.

Winners: The New Age Outlaws (10:33)

Jarrett argues with Debra because her distraction failed. Meanwhile, the Outlaws celebrate in the ring. Road Dogg asks them to cut the music. He then tells Gunn to moon the crowd. Women scream as Billy shows his thong.

Shane McMahon interview - Backlash 1999

Then Cole interviews Shane McMahon. He wants to confirm what Shane said on Heat. Shane says if Austin attacks him, he will disqualify Stone Cold and give the belt to The Rock. Cole asks how Shane can be impartial. Will he count the three if Austin pins Rocky? Shane doesn’t offer guarantees like his father, but he gives Cole his word. He swears on his grandfather’s grave he will make the count if Austin wins. With that said, Cole reminds Shane his father is there. Shane corrects him. Vince isn’t his father anymore. But Shane has a message for Vince. He tells him to take Stephanie to a sky box and stay out of his way.

Stephanie and Vince - Backlash 1999

Kevin Kelly is with Vince and Stephanie for a rebuttal. He repeats Shane’s message. Vince calls the situation surreal. Shane runs things, but the family is Vince’s focus. That’s more important than business. Vince also says he hopes Shane doesn’t believe what he says. Next, Kevin asks for Vince’s thoughts about Shane swearing on his grandfather’s grave. Stephanie answers this question. She says Shane knows how much their grandfather meant to Vince. He knew what he was saying. Finally, Vince sums everything up. Shane made a big mistake on RAW, but Vince hopes he doesn’t make a bigger one tonight.

After the interviews, we see Big Show approach the boiler room. He enters and looks for Mankind. Mick jumps him from behind.

Mankind vs. Big Show Boiler Room Brawl - Backlash 1999

Boiler Room Brawl: Mankind vs. The Big Show

Notes: The Corporation kicked Big Show out of the group after Mania, so Show vowed to make them pay. Shane put Show in a handicap contest with Rock and Triple H, and Chyna interfered. Austin aided the Big Show, but the Corporation wasn’t Show’s only problem. Mankind had unfinished business. He wanted revenge for what Show did at Mania. Mankind promised to spend two weeks in the boiler room preparing for a Boiler Room Brawl. So the Corporation sent the Mean Street Posse to attack Mankind. He easily fended them off. Next, the Corporation attacked Mankind again when he wrestled Triple H. Big Show came to Mankind’s rescue. Mick appreciated the help, but he said it changed nothing. Show and Mankind still had a date with destiny. However, Mankind returned the favor and saved Big Show when the Ministry jumped him.

The Match: Mankind closes a door on Show’s arm. Show answers by whipping Mankind into some cabinets and a table. Then they fight with a ladder, pieces of sheetrock, and a trash can. Show kicks the can into Mankind’s face and stuffs him into a cart. He pushes Mankind into some boards. With Mick down, Show heads for the door. But Mankind stops him with a pane of glass. It cuts Mick’s hand. This allows Show to recover and chokeslam Mick on a table. He also loads Foley onto a rolling ramp and sends him flying. When Show approaches him, Mankind breaks a pipe, and it sprays something in Show’s face. Next, Mankind uses a pipe on him and nails a low blow. Afterward, he buries Show under a pile of pipes. An exhausted Foley crawls to the door, leaving bloody handprints in his wake. He escapes for the win.

Thoughts: This was great. They filled it with unique props and cool visuals. I loved the bloody handprints. It was a nice touch. Plus, it wasn’t too long. It didn’t overstay its welcome. This was exactly what it should be.

Winner: Mankind (7:40)

The Big Boss Man and Test attack as soon as Mankind exits the room. They knock him back through the door, and Boss Man hits Mick with some wood. While this happens, Big Show rises from the pipes and punches Test. He then chases Boss Man away. Once they’re gone, Mankind puts a Socko Claw on Test.

Chyna and Triple H - Backlash 1999

Next, Cole interviews Triple H and Chyna. He says they get what they want tonight, but Chyna claims they always get what they want. However, they don’t want an ungrateful punk who forgot how he got there. Chyna tells X-Pac there’s a pecking order, and somebody should put him in his place. After she speaks, Hunter addresses X-Pac. Triple H says X-Pac asked for this. He said it before, and he’ll say it again. Hunter made X-Pac’s ass, and he’ll break it.

Meanwhile, a doctor stitches Big Show’s head and checks his broken hand. Also, Mankind wanders through the wreckage and surveys the damage. He points out everything Big Show did to him. Mankind calls it the residue of human misery. He can’t fight Big Show anymore because he has kids! When Mick spots the ladder, he vows to stay away from them. Finally, Mankind observes the bloody prints. He calls them police evidence.

Triple H vs. X-Pac - Backlash 1999

Triple H (w/ Chyna) vs. X-Pac

Notes: Triple H joined the Corporation at Mania, but he claimed he still owned the DX trademark. X-Pac called Hunter out for his betrayal, so Triple H challenged him to a match. When they wrestled, Chyna interfered and Kane came to X-Pac’s rescue. As I mentioned earlier, this led to Kane and X-Pac winning the tag titles. Later, Kane and X-Pac faced Triple H and Test. Hunter avoided Kane’s Tombstone by throwing Test into the ring to take it instead. Then Kane and X-Pac fought Triple H and The Rock on Heat. It ended in a DQ when Jarrett and Owen attacked. However, Kane was late to the bout. X-Pac argued with him afterward.

The Match: They exchange strikes and knock each other to the floor. Hunter whips X-Pac into the steps and the announce table. But Pac answers with kicks when they return to the ring. To stop the attack, Chyna distracts X-Pac. He evades her interference. However, the distraction allows Hunter to take control. He focuses on X-Pac’s neck. Hunter uses neckbreakers, front facelocks, knee drops, and a Dragon Sleeper. Later, Pac rallies with kicks, clotheslines, and a tornado DDT. Then the ref goes down, so Chyna gives X-Pac a low blow and a reverse DDT. This draws out Kane. He chokeslams Hunter and Chyna and places them in the corners before leaving. X-Pac capitalizes with Bronco Busters to both of them. But he targeted Chyna second, so Hunter recovers and nails the Pedigree for the victory.

Thoughts: This was a solid bout with good storytelling. Triple H working the neck made sense and added drama. Plus, the Kane stuff was nice. The only problem is the fans didn’t like it. They chanted boring a few times. I don’t agree. This was great, despite the crowd.

Winner: Triple H (19:19)

The Undertaker vs Ken Shamrock - Backlash 1999

The Undertaker (w/ Paul Bearer) vs. Ken Shamrock

Notes: Since Shamrock thwarted the Undertaker’s plans with Stephanie, Taker targeted Ryan Shamrock. He kidnapped her and strapped her to his symbol. Then Taker locked her in the boiler room. Shamrock beat up members of the Ministry until he learned her location. Once he found her, Ken and Mankind saved her. Afterward, Shamrock threatened Taker and the Ministry with a baseball bat. Taker told him to be careful. He knew where Ryan’s hotel room was. But Taker wasn’t done. He promised another tragedy after he deals with Shamrock. Meanwhile, Ken also had issues with Shane McMahon. Shane sent the Corporation after him because Ken sided with Vince.

The Match: They trade punches until Taker does Old School and a jumping clothesline. Shamrock answers with leg attacks. He works on Taker’s knee with rolling leglocks and leg grapevines. Taker claws and strikes to regain control, but Ken keeps kicking his leg. He also grabs a cross armbreaker. Taker’s only relief comes when he takes the fight to the floor. He rams Ken into the post and the steps. Then Taker targets the back. He does a bending backbreaker, bow and arrow stretch, and half crab. This lasts until Shamrock scores a chop block and a hurricanrana. It leads to anklelock attempts, so Bradshaw arrives to help. Ken fends him off and counters a chokeslam into another cross armbreaker. However, Paul Bearer gets his attention. It doesn’t last, and Ken lands a belly-to-belly. But Taker reverses Ken’s Tombstone attempt and hits the move for the three.

Thoughts: This was slow. It had good psychology, but it never built to a crescendo like the last match. They lost the crowd. At one point, I heard an end this match chant. The action wasn’t bad, but it was dull.

Winner: The Undertaker (18:50)

As Taker leaves, he tells Bradshaw to attack. Bradshaw enters the ring and rams a baseball bat into Ken’s gut. He follows with a powerbomb and chokes Ken out with the bat. Bradshaw leaves once Shamrock is unconscious.

Main Event Recap - Backlash 1999

Then they recap the main event storyline. It revolves around Austin’s desire to get his Smoking Skull belt back. Vince was willing, but Shane refused. He gave it to The Rock instead. This led to a destroyed Titantron, fighting on a bridge, a mock funeral, and monster truck antics. Shane even attacked Austin with a shovel.

Vince and Stephanie - Backlash 1999

Before the main event, Vince puts Stephanie in a limo. He kisses her and assures her they’ll head home once the show ends. Vince then tells some cops to watch her while he heads inside. He promises them they will be out of their hair after the match.

This leads to the entrances for Austin vs. The Rock. Shane is first. The Fink calls him the acting chairman of the WWF. Lawler says he is the owner. After Shane is The Rock. He carries the Smoking Skull belt over his shoulder. Lawler says possession is 90% of the law, but JR doesn’t agree. Jerry also likes Shane’s stipulation. Wrestlers shouldn’t attack referees. JR counters by saying referees should hit wrestlers with a shovel. While they discuss this, Shane gives the belt to a member of the crew. Shane tells him to put it in his office. Finally, Austin arrives and storms to the ring.

The Rock vs. Stone Cold - Backlash 1999

No Holds Barred Match for the WWF Title: Stone Cold Steve Austin (c) vs. The Rock

Notes: Austin wanted his Smoking Skull belt. Since Vince had other things to worry about, he agreed to return it. But Shane had other plans. He gave it to the Rock. Next, Shane booked this rematch and appointed himself as the referee. Shane also taunted Austin with images of Rocky wearing the belt. He put them on the Titantron, so Austin told Big Show to pull the Titantron down. Austin then destroyed the screen. In retaliation, Rock took the Smoking Skull belt to a bridge and threatened to throw it in the river. When Austin met him, Rock tossed Austin into the water! Afterward, Rocky threw a mock funeral for Stone Cold. Austin interrupted it in a monster truck and crushed the Rock’s car! However, Shane attacked Austin with a shovel. Finally, Shane made this No Holds Barred. But Shane will give Rocky the win if Austin attacks him.

The Match: Austin hits a Thesz Press and Rock lands a swinging neckbreaker. Then they brawl down the aisle and destroy the entrance set. After fighting on the wreckage, they use equipment cases, guardrails, and camera cables. Soon, the fight returns to the ringside area. They fight on the announce tables and Rock breaks it with a Rock Bottom. He then dons a headset and calls Austin trash. Next, Shane swipes a chair from Austin before they do some crowd fighting. Afterward, Rock takes a camera. He films himself flipping off Austin and turns to the fans. When he pans back, Austin is there with a double bird and a Stunner. Back in the ring, Rock shoves Austin into Shane and nails a Rock Bottom. It only gets two, so Shane grabs the belt. But he decks Rocky by mistake! Austin covers only for Shane to refuse to count!

Shane runs, but Vince and Earl Hebner appear. Vince has the Smoking Skull belt. He clocks Shane with it and sends Earl to the ring. As Hebner arrives, Rock smacks Austin with the WWF Title, but he only gets two! He tries again and misses. Austin capitalizes with a Stunner and a belt shot for the victory.

Thoughts: This was a wild and entertaining brawl. It was glorious chaos. Their Mania match was good, but this was better. The spot with the camera was great. Rocky turning to see Austin flip him off and hit a Stunner was an amazing visual. I loved it.

Winner: Steve Austin (17:07)

Vince watches Austin celebrate. He looks annoyed, but he slides the Smoking Skull belt into the ring. Austin picks it up and poses with both titles as Vince leaves.

Where to, Stephanie? - Backlash 1999

While that happens, they go outside to Stephanie’s limo. The Ministry arrives, so the cops tell the driver to leave. Stephanie says they have to wait for her dad. She asks the driver to stop, and he does. But then the divider lowers and we see—The Undertaker! He grins and says, “Where to, Stephanie?” As Taker laughs, Stephanie screams for her dad. This horrifies JR and Lawler. They try in vain to get Vince’s attention as the show ends with Austin still celebrating.

The Good:

  • The main event was chaotic fun.

  • The Boiler Room Brawl was good and unique.

  • Triple H/X-Pac was solid and had nice storytelling.

  • The Outlaws vs. Jarrett & Owen was strong.

  • That ending.

The Bad:

  • Undertaker/Shamrock was dull.

Observations:

  • They turned the IC Title into a hot potato, which diminished its worth.

  • Everyone loves the X7 match, with good reason. But Backlash ’99 is my favorite Rock/Austin match.

  • The final scene of this PPV is one of my all-time favorite endings to a show.

Performer of the Night:

I’m giving it to Austin. He did great in the main event, and he made me laugh during the bout. The Mania match disappointed Austin, but he loves this one. I can see why.

Final Thoughts:

They bounced back after the disappointing WrestleMania. It’s an enjoyable and easy watch with a great main event. Almost everything delivered. The Undertaker vs. Shamrock was the only downside, and even that wasn’t terrible. This is another event that showcases the Attitude Era’s variety. There’s something for everyone in this program.

Thank you for reading. My next review is WCW’s Slamboree ’99. Look for it next Sunday!
