Uncensored

March 14, 1999

Freedom Hall

Louisville, Kentucky

News & Notes: I have no extra news to cover. Uncensored aired three weeks after SuperBrawl. I fit the storyline information into the match notes. So, without further ado, let’s begin.

Opening Video - Uncensored 99

Ominous music plays while they show footage of workers. They weld the barbed wire cage. The video cuts between this and negative images of Hogan and Flair fighting. We see them whipping each other with Hogan’s weight belt.

Commentators - Uncensored 99

Fireworks explode, and Schiavone welcomes everyone. He compares the action to the wacky weather in the area. Tony says this is the most mind-boggling Pay Per View of the year. (He isn’t wrong.) They filled it with power-packed matches and bizarre stipulations. Then Tony calls Heenan a weasel, so Bobby complains. He says, “Don’t start out like that!” Schiavone and Tenay ignore him and discuss the main event. The barbed wire cage has first blood rules. (Remember that.) Tenay says it will have long-term effects on WCW. If Flair wins, he is WCW’s president for life. But if he loses, Flair must retire! Heenan predicts Flair will win his fourteenth championship.

Mean Gene is also there. He plugs the hotline and reminds us Uncensored is an unsanctioned PPV. (How can they have title matches if it’s unsanctioned?)

Kevin Nash Recap - Uncensored 1999

Gene tries to send it to Penzer, but we get a recap video first. They cover the Nash/Mysterio feud. Kevin took Rey’s mask and mocked him. Mysterio said it wasn’t about the mask anymore. Rey wanted a piece of Nash. They wrestled on Nitro, and Rey got an upset win. Afterward, Nash offered Rey a spot in the Wolfpac, but he wasn’t interested. The Wolfpac attacked Rey for declining the opportunity.

Now it is time for the opening contest. Mikey Whipwreck makes his WCW debut. He has no music. Plus, the fans boo him. Heenan says he heard a lot about Mikey Shipwreck. Tony admonishes Brain for not knowing Mikey’s name. Heenan doubles down with a Gilligan’s Island joke.

Kidman vs. Mikey Whipwreck - Uncensored 1999

Cruiserweight Title Match: Kidman (c) vs. Mikey Whipwreck

Notes: This is Whipwreck’s WCW debut. He didn’t appear on TV. On the other hand, Kidman was busy. Billy defended the belt against Psychosis. Then Chavo received a rematch. Guerrero almost scored an upset with his feet on the ropes, but the ref caught him. Later, Kidman faced Jericho on Saturday Night. The bout ended in disqualification because Saturn interrupted it.

The Match: They trade takedowns, knockdowns, and strikes until Mikey regroups. Kidman lands a flying crossbody. Mikey answers with a wheel kick that takes them outside. There, Mikey hits a wheelbarrow slam on the rail! Back inside, Whipwreck grabs submission holds. He also uses a slingshot leg drop and counters Kidman’s flip into a powerbomb. Next, they scuffle on the top rope and floor. Mikey crashes and burns when Kidman evades his planchas. But Whipwreck rebounds with a drop toe hold on the steps. Then they fight back and forth until Kidman nails a Sky High. Mikey responds with a swinging neckbreaker and a flying clothesline. However, Kidman recovers and does a sit-out Pedigree. It’s not enough. Mikey rallies with a release back superplex and an elevated reverse DDT. He continues with a powerbomb attempt, so Kidman turns it into a facebuster. This leads to the SSP for the win.

Thoughts: It was a fun opener. Mikey knew he was coming in cold, so he went out of his way to impress people. Kidman gave him a lot. The action was hard-hitting, but they may have done too much. There was little selling between moves. But this was still enjoyable. The hot crowd helped.

Winner: Kidman (14:57)

Heenan got Mikey’s name wrong the entire time. When they do the replay, I swear Bobby calls him Mikey Sheepdick.

Stevie Ray Promo - Uncensored 99

Next, they show promos from Stevie Ray and Vincent about their match. They talk trash to each other. Stevie says Vince dropped the ball. He labels him ten-cent Vincent. We also see clips of Hogan causing drama between them. Stevie challenged Vince to a Harlem Street Fight. Vincent promises to beat Stevie from one project to another. Stevie calls Vince a fruit booty. Then they tell each other to dig that, punk!

Afterward, we see more footage of the workers building the cage. Flair says it has barbed wire and no doors. One man will walk out as champion!

Then Stevie Ray and Vincent arrive for their bout. Tony and Tenay discuss Nash and Hogan manipulating Stevie and Vince. Schiavone doesn’t think they realize Hogan manipulated them. Tenay wonders if the other B-Team members voted on this. As far as Heenan, he would bet his money on Stevie winning, if he was a betting man.

Stevie Ray vs. Vincent - Uncensored 1999

Harlem Street Fight for Leadership of the nWo Black & White: Stevie Ray vs. Vincent

Notes: Hogan continued stirring the pot with the B-Team. He told Vincent, Brian Adams, and Horace they were in charge. This confused Scott Norton, so he spoke with Hogan. Hollywood said Norton was the man. Then the B-Team interfered in Scott Steiner vs. Goldberg. Stevie Ray threw Vincent to the wolves and let him take a spear. Vincent gained revenge by costing Stevie a victory with the slapjack. Afterward, Hogan and Nash goaded Vince and Stevie into fighting with each other. It led to this encounter to determine the rightful leader of the B-Team.

The Match: It starts with shoving and eye pokes. Stevie then hits a bicycle kick and a choke toss. Vincent answers by low-bridging Stevie. He slowly falls to the floor. There, they whip each other into the rails and head into the stands. Stevie and Vincent fight in a section of folded-up chairs. They struggle to stand while throwing weak kicks. Then the action spills over the rail and back to the ring. Vincent does diving fist drops until Stevie boots him in the face. This leads to an awkward collision after an atomic drop. A dazed Vince lands on Stevie’s crotch. While they’re down, Horace appears. He throws the slapjack onto the mat. Horace says he doesn’t care who wins. He is the real leader. Vince grabs the weapon, but Stevie kicks him. Stevie then nails the Slapjack for the win. (I mean the move, not the weapon.)

Thoughts: This was a mindless brawl full of weak offense. They were awkward and slow. The fans were loud when they fought in the crowd, but they didn’t care about the rest. This is a match you don’t want to show your friends who hate wrestling. It was two men play-fighting poorly. This looked like two guys fresh out of wrestling school rehearsing a match.

Winner: Stevie Ray (6:30)

Chris Jericho in the internet booth - Uncensored 99

Jericho is in the internet booth with Mark Madden and Chad Damiani. (Thank you, Jeff Gorman, for giving me his name.) Madden calls himself the Jericho expert, so Jericho shoves his hand in Chad’s face. Mark asks if Jericho can make Saturn look more ridiculous than he already has. Chris says it isn’t possible. Saturn makes himself look ridiculous. He looks like a streetwalker. Then Jericho compliments Madden, but he insults Chad. Mark thanks him and asks about the Dog Collar Match. Jericho says he’s never had one, but he is the Swami of them. How hard could they be? Jericho vows to whip sense into Saturn with the chain.

Then Nash, Luger, and Miss Elizabeth enter the arena. Tony discusses Mysterio’s recent wins, but Liz distracts him for a second. When he recovers, he says it will be Rey’s toughest night. Nash is ready. However, Tenay believes Rey’s career is better than ever since losing the mask. Nash even offered Rey a spot in the Wolfpac. Tenay wonders if it was legitimate. Tony doesn’t think so.

Kevin Nash vs. Rey Mysterio - Uncensored 99

Kevin Nash (w/ Lex Luger & Miss Elizabeth) vs. Rey Mysterio Jr.

Notes: Nash taunted Rey with the mask. He even attempted to give it back to Mysterio. Rey said it wasn’t about the mask anymore. He wanted a piece of Nash, so they wrestled. Rey scored a surprise pinfall, which left Nash beside himself. Afterward, Nash offered Rey a spot in the Wolfpac, but Rey declined. Then Mysterio developed a reputation as a giant killer. He earned victories over Bigelow and Scott Norton. Rey then teamed with Booker and beat Scott Steiner and Buff Bagwell. Mean Gene tried to congratulate Rey on his wins, but Nash and Luger attacked Mysterio.

The Match: Nash surprises Rey with a big boot and a beal toss. He tries another, but Rey turns it into a wheelbarrow bulldog. Mysterio follows with a springboard leg drop and a wheel kick that sends Nash outside. After a feint, Rey dropkicks Kevin through the ropes. He continues with a baseball slide, only for Nash to sidestep him. Nash shoves Rey into the rail and gives him snake eyes on the apron. Back inside, Nash does his corner offense and knocks Rey off the top rope. He also nails a choke-lift Manhattan Drop. Then Nash grabs him again, so Rey does a low blow and a Bronco Buster. A moonsault is next, but Nash catches him. Rey slips out, so Luger trips him. Nash capitalizes with a big boot and a Jackknife for the victory.

Thoughts: I know people don’t like this, but I enjoyed it. The fans were hot for it. Rey had enough hope spots to look like he had a chance. Plus, Nash used Luger’s help to win. It was short, explosive, and exciting. Rey wouldn’t win the feud. It only needed to build sympathy and make him look good. They did that.

Winner: Kevin Nash (6:19, How appropriate!)

Tony and Bobby argue about Luger’s interference. Bobby didn’t see it, but he sees the replay. Heenan pretends he always knew it happened. This leaves Schiavone speechless.

Hardcore Hak Promo - Uncensored 99

Next, they recap the Hak/Raven/Bigelow feud. Raven says, “What about me? What about Raven?” He promises to pass on the violence of his childhood. Then Hak talks about his wars with Raven and Bam Bam. If they think they are hardcore, bring it on! Finally, Bigelow says if they want hardcore, they got it. He will take them to the next level and it won’t be nice. He vows to bring them to the dirty and nasty, hardcore city.

Before we get to that bout, it’s time for a Handicap Match. Jerry Flynn faces Ernest Miller and Sonny Onoo. The WWE Network dubbed over Miller’s James Brown theme. Ernest wears a hat, so Tony calls him the Cat in the Hat. It amuses Tenay and Heenan. Miller dances his way to the ring.

Jerry Flynn vs. Miller and Onoo - Uncensored 99

Handicap Match: Jerry Flynn vs. Ernest Miller & Sonny Onoo

Notes: Jerry Flynn’s winning ways continued. He earned wins with a cross armbreaker. Meanwhile, Ernest Miller tried to update his presentation. He bought Glacier’s expensive entrance because Glacier needed the money. But the lasers and snow disappointed the Cat. He opted for a new James Brown rip-off theme instead. Then Miller and Flynn’s paths crossed. Flynn grew tired of Miller’s karate shtick. He challenged Miller. The Cat used Onoo’s interference and a ref distraction to win by knockout. So they announced this Handicap bout. Miller and Onoo had a warm-up against Al Green. Ernest held Green for a kick and let Onoo pin him with his foot. Later, Onoo distracted Flynn with a fake apology and money. The Cat jumped Flynn and Onoo cut off his ponytail.

The Match: Flynn and Miller trade strikes, but Onoo doesn’t want to join the action. Then Jerry scores a belly-to-belly and a sweep, so Miller begs off and regroups. Flynn doesn’t let him rest. He lands a pescado on Cat and Onoo. However, Miller takes control when Onoo distracts Flynn with kicks. The Cat nails sidekicks and spin kicks. Flynn appears to be out, so Ernest tags Onoo. Sonny does a cocky pin, but he scurries when Flynn shows life. Next, Miller takes the fight to the floor. The ref stops a chair attack, but Cat uses the railing. Onoo doesn’t want another tag. It causes an argument, so Flynn rolls Miller up for two. He then whips Ernest into Onoo, who falls into the ring. The ref calls it a tag and Flynn covers for the win before Miller can stop him.

Thoughts: This was uninteresting and slow. Plus, the finish was awkward. Miller almost broke up the pin too early. Even the announcers weren’t sure it was a three. Why is this on the PPV? No one cares about a Jerry Flynn feud.

Winner: Jerry Flynn (7:08)

Benoit and Malenko Promo - Uncensored 99

Benoit and Malenko cut a promo about the upcoming Lumberjack Match. Chris says you get few opportunities to show the world you are number one. Hennig and Windham only showed they are cowards. Then Malenko snaps the belt. He wants Windham to remember the sound. This leads to comments from Hennig and Windham. Curt says the tag titles are the only belts that will touch their skin. Hennig calls Benoit and Malenko wannabes and losers.

Afterward, Hak, Bam Bam, and Raven arrive. Bigelow has no music. Hak uses Mongo’s old theme. And Raven has his WWF song on the network. Chastity accompanies Raven. Tony thinks Raven’s trip home made him more intense.

Hak vs. Raven vs. Bigelow - Uncensored 1999

Raven’s Rules Triangle Match: Hardcore Hak vs. Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Raven (w/ Chastity)

Notes: Hardcore Hak declared all his fights would be under Hak’s Rules, which means no rules. He beat Damien with a cane and a chair. Unfortunately for him, Raven returned to work with his sister, Chastity. Raven took exception because Hak ripped off Raven’s Rules. He threatened to stomp Hak like a narc at a biker rally. Then Bam Bam lost to Mysterio and unleashed his fury on Raven. It became a brawl, so Hak joined the fun and caned everybody! This led to Hak vs. Raven. The action spilled into the parking lot, where Bigelow entered the fray. They scuffled around Ric Flair’s limo and shattered the windshield.

The Match: Raven and Bigelow jump Hak while Chastity provides a weapons cart. It contains trash cans, mops, an ironing board, a mailbox, and cookie sheets. Bigelow and Raven duel with the cans. Hak bends the ironing board over them. Then Raven does drop toe holds on the weapons. We get traded weapon shots until Hak gives Raven a Super Frankensteiner. He recovers, and Raven and Bigelow slam Hak on a table with a superbomb. It doesn’t break, so Bigelow splashes him. Next, Chastity distracts Hak and helps Raven duct tape his arms. Raven blasts Hak with chair shots. But Raven can’t capitalize because Bigelow gives him the Greetings. It leads to Bigelow and Chastity using fire extinguishers on each other. Chastity knocks Bigelow through a table, so Raven goes after Hak. However, Chastity sprays Raven with the extinguisher and headbutts his nuts! Hak then pins him.

Thoughts: It was too long and repetitive. Plus, the finish made no sense. If Chastity planned to turn on Raven, why did she help him tape Hak’s arms? Also, if you’re going to do hardcore matches, you need to use unique locations. They remained in the ring, so it wasn’t interesting. I didn’t like it.

Winner: Hardcore Hak (14:29)

Chastity screams at Raven and helps Hak to his feet. Tenay says Raven is part of the poster family for dysfunction.

Bobby Heenan Sulks - Uncensored 99

While they clean the ring, we go to the commentators. Heenan looks at the crowd while Tony speaks, so Tony admonishes him. Bobby takes offense to this and turns his back to sulk. Tenay asks what he’s doing. Tony doesn’t know. Then Tony and Mike speak about the main event and the nWo’s motives. Heenan still won’t face the camera, so Tony reminds him WCW pays Bobby to be an announcer. Bobby says he doesn’t like Tony talking to him like that, but he faces the front again. Heenan whacks his knee on the desk as he turns.

Up next is Hennig and Windham vs. Benoit and Malenko in a Lumberjack Match. Ominous music brings us shirtless lumberjacks with belts. Kendall Windham is there, so Tenay questions this. He isn’t the only one. Arn Anderson appears. He takes Chris Adams’ spot as a lumberjack. This pisses off Hennig and Windham. They try to leave, so the lumberjacks drive them to the ring with their belts.

Lumberjacks: Norman Smiley, Hugh Morrus, Meng, Kenny Kaos, Kendall Windham, Bobby Duncum Jr., Prince Iaukea, & Arn Anderson.

Benoit and Malenko vs. Hennig and Windham - Uncensored 99

Lumberjack Match for the Tag Team Titles: Chris Benoit & Dean Malenko vs. Curt Hennig & Barry Windham (c)

Notes: Benoit and Malenko attacked Hennig and Windham after SuperBrawl ended. They whipped them with belts to avenge Windham’s belt attack. The Horsemen wanted a rematch, but Hennig and Windham said they didn’t deserve it. Then Benoit wrestled Bret Hart. Windham choked Benoit out with a belt while Bret handled Malenko. The Horsemen had enough. They challenged Hennig and Windham to a Lumberjack Match with a twist. The lumberjacks carry belts as weapons. Later, Benoit and Malenko surprised Hennig and Windham and whipped them again. Afterward, Hennig and Windham tried to set the Horsemen up for an ambush. Disorderly Conduct jumped Benoit and Malenko after wrestling them. They failed.

The Match: The Horsemen fluster Hennig and Windham. They regroup and endure whippings from the lumberjacks. Benoit and Malenko continue their dominance. They use a backdrop, leg lariat, and Manhattan Drop. The flurry ends when Windham scores a DDT. Then Hennig and Windham throw Benoit to Kendall’s side and they whip Chris. The Horsemen fall victim to double-teaming and lariats until Benoit nails a German. It leads to Dean’s tag and everyone brawls. Malenko reverses a Hennig Plex and grabs a Cloverleaf. Windham breaks it behind the ref’s back. Arn then stops Kendall’s side from whipping Benoit again. But he can’t end Hennig and Windham’s double-teaming. It continues until Benoit makes a hot tag. He cleans house and a lumberjack brawl begins. Hennig decks Arn, so Anderson clocks Hennig with a tire iron. This allows Benoit to nail a flying headbutt for the three.

Thoughts: This was much better than the SuperBrawl encounter. I liked the intensity and storytelling. Lumberjack Matches rarely enthrall me, but adding the belts made it better.

Winners: Benoit & Malenko (New Champions) (15:58)

Up next is Jericho vs. Saturn in a Dog Collar Match. During Jericho’s entrance, Heenan implies Ralphus scored with two ladies the previous night. Then Saturn arrives in his promised new outfit. He wears a black leather corset and skirt. Perry also donned colored contacts and black lipstick. He yells, “What are you looking at!?” A disturbed Jericho tries to make Ralphus face Saturn. Ralphus refuses the dog collar, so Jericho sends him to the back. But he collects his mouth guard first. No one busts Jericho’s teeth! However, Jericho won’t attach the collar. He jumps Saturn instead.

Dog Collar Match - Uncensored 1999

Dog Collar Match: Saturn vs. Chris Jericho

Notes: Saturn embraced the dress stipulation. He told JJ Dillon to watch how weird he can be. Then Saturn cost Jericho a victory against Hugh Morrus, but he drew Hugh’s ire. Saturn wrestled Hugh and Jericho hit Perry with a chain. This led to Saturn challenging Jericho to a Dog Collar Match. Jericho accepted it and vowed to get the dress off Saturn. After all, WCW is a PG-rated company! Jericho also claimed he was the master of the chain. Chris made Lizmark Jr. face him in a Dog Collar fight. Later, Jericho and Saturn jumped each other with a chain on Saturday Night. Saturn used it to tie Jericho up.

The Match: Saturn suplexes Chris and puts the collar on him. He uses chain-wrapped punches, choking, a clothesline, and a leg drop. Then Saturn pulls Jericho into the rail! However, Jericho rallies with a chain to Saturn’s crotch. Jericho follows with a hanging choke and a triangle shoulder block. Later, they tumble outside. When they return, Jericho does his cocky pin. He removes his mouth guard to say come on, baby. Saturn yanks him down by the chain. He wraps the skirt over Jericho for ten punches. Saturn almost blocks a Liontamer. Jericho turns him, but Saturn chokes Chris with the chain. They collapse. When they recover, Saturn hits the DVD for only two! Jericho gets his own close count with a superbomb. Afterward, Jericho unhooks Saturn and wraps himself in the chain. But a missed moonsault and splash hurts him. Saturn capitalizes with another DVD for the win.

Thoughts: It contained some good spots, but most of it dragged. I liked the Liontamer spot and the finish. The rest wasn’t great. Dog Collar fights without brutality and blood aren’t interesting. It’s time to move on from this feud.

Winner: Saturn (11:50)

Mikey Whipwreck in the internet booth - Uncensored 1999

Mikey Whipwreck is in the internet booth. Madden welcomes Mikey to the major leagues. He lost, but Mark says Mikey’s performance should make him happy. Whipwreck agrees. He watched WCW from his home and wanted to join the action. Then Chad asks if Mikey saw tapes of Kidman. Whipwreck says he did. He thinks Kidman is a good champion. Finally, Madden asks if there is a counter to the Shooting Star Press, but we don’t hear the answer.

Then Scott Steiner and Buff Bagwell enter the arena. Heenan thinks Steiner’s arms grow bigger every week. Tony worries about Steiner appearing on a show called Uncensored. Tenay calls it the ultimate definition of unsafe working conditions. Heenan recalls Tony telling him Scott was always the dangerous Steiner. Scotty proves this point by swiping a fan’s replica belt. He throws it on the ground.

Scott Steiner vs. Booker T - Uncensored 1999

TV Title Match: Booker T vs. Scott Steiner (c) (w/ Buff Bagwell)

Notes: It appears WCW changed their booking plans. Steiner started beef with Goldberg, and Booker won a US Title Contender bout. Rick Steiner even returned to fight with his brother. They scrapped those ideas and switched directions. Buff Bagwell wrestled Booker. Scott Steiner used a chair on Booker to cost him the win. This led to Booker wrestling Scott for the TV belt. Bagwell shoved Booker off the top rope, and Steiner put him in the Recliner. Booker passed out, so Buff and Scott beat him up with a chair. Later, Booker and Mysterio teamed against Scott and Buff. Rey scored another of his upset wins in the contest. Steiner tried to gain revenge with a chair, but Booker and Rey escaped.

The Match: They trade headlocks and shoulder blocks. Steiner regroups and tells the ref to check Booker’s gloves. Scotty attacks, but Booker does a sidekick, Manhattan Drop, and clothesline. Steiner bails and lures Booker into a trap. It doesn’t last. Booker rallies with a flying crossbody, so Buff intervenes. It allows Steiner to take control. He distracts the ref for more Bagwell interference. Scott capitalizes with suplexes, a chair shot, and a rear chinlock. This continues until Booker scores a jumping forearm, heel kick, axe kick, and flapjack. After a Spinaroonie, Booker almost hits the ref with a Harlem Sidekick. Booker nails the second one on Steiner, but Buff crotches Booker on the top rope. Steiner takes the opening and lands a superplex. He then tells Buff to grab a chair. Scott holds Booker only for Buff to clock Steiner by mistake! Booker dispatches Bagwell and pins Steiner.

Thoughts: It had its moments, but this was slow. There was too much stalling and outside interference. Plus, why would the ref do nothing about Buff’s chair attack? I know he hit the wrong man, but the ref watched it happen. It’s nice to see Booker regain his belt, but this wasn’t great.

Winner: Booker T (New Champion) (13:30)

They show the workers building the cage again. Then Buffer introduces the main event. He calls it a world heavyweight cage match like no other in history. There is no door. Razor wire lines the top. No one will leave until there is a winner. If Flair wins, he gets the gold and is WCW’s president for life! But if Hogan succeeds, they will ban Flair from WCW for life. Then Flair arrives. He grabs the mic and addresses Charles Robinson. Ric tells him not to stop the bout for a scratch. It is the referee’s discretion. A fan boos, so Flair tells him to shut up. Heenan compares this bout to the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. You can hear the discomfort in Schiavone’s voice after this. Next, Hogan enters, and they lower the cage. We hear ominous music, but Tony speaks over it.

Hogan vs. Flair Barbed Wire Cage - Uncensored 1999

Barbed Wire Cage First Blood Match for the WCW Title: Ric Flair vs. Hollywood Hogan (c)

Notes: The nWo taunted Flair with David’s betrayal. They aired a parody of the Horsemen. Then Hogan took David for a night on the town. He bought him a stripper named Mrs. Robinson. Flair challenged Hogan to this fight and ordered him to defend the belt. However, Ric refused to open up about his feelings. He pretended David’s turn didn’t faze him. Hogan called Ric out for this. He said Flair was worse than him because he didn’t care about his son. Hogan didn’t want to face this mopey Flair. He wanted the old Ric. So Hogan offered Flair a permanent presidency of WCW as a prize! Meanwhile, even Arn and Goldberg showed concern for Flair’s behavior. They confronted David about his treatment of his father. The Goldberg confrontation angered Flair, so Goldberg said Ric lost his mind. Ric wrestled Goldberg, but the nWo interrupted the bout and jumped Flair.

The Match: They trade headlocks, chops, and punches. Hogan grabs a Figure Four, but Flair escapes. Then Hogan busts Flair open. He even pulls down some wire and cuts Ric. Robinson ignores this, which confuses the commentators. Since Charles won’t end it, Hogan does the leg drop and demands a pin. Robinson refuses. This draws out David and Torrie, as Flair uses a weapon. Ric calls David a punk and taunts Torrie. Next, Ric makes Hogan bleed. Charles counts Ric’s pinfall, but Hogan hulks up! He does the big boot and leg drop. Robinson hesitates to count, so Hogan confronts him. Flair attacks, but Hogan rallies. Robinson tries to stop him and gets wiped out. Arn arrives. He decks David, fends off Torrie, and hands Ric a tire iron. Flair clocks Hogan and locks in a Figure Four. Charles counts Hogan’s shoulders on the mat with a fast count.

Thoughts: What was the point of making this a First Blood contest if they were going to ignore it? I get Charles Robinson was in Flair’s pocket, but tell that story within the stipulation. They made it needlessly confusing. Only in WCW would a First Blood bout end with a pinfall. This was a terrible mess. Also, this was a double turn. They’re transitioning Hogan back to face and making Flair a heel. It defeats the purpose of turning David Flair heel.

Winner: Ric Flair (New Champion and President for life!) (14:19)

David Flair enters the ring and berates Hogan for his loss. They keep a wide shot because Hogan is bleeding, so we can’t hear a word. Tony says goodnight.

The Good:

  • The opener was good.

  • Nash/Rey was enjoyable.

  • The Tag Title Match was solid.

The Bad:

  • The main event was a confusing mess.

  • Stevie/Vincent was awful.

  • Flynn vs. Miller & Onoo was pointless.

Observations:

  • The build had some awful episodes of Nitro. One week had zero matches in the first hour!

  • This time, Heenan seemed legitimately angry with Schiavone. Their relationship is falling apart before our eyes!

  • The Sandman/Raven feud came full circle! Raven stole Sandman’s family in ECW. So Hak stole Chastity in WCW!

Performer of the Night:

I’ll give it to Mikey Whipwreck. He came to impress. Also, he read the room and played the heel role when the fans booed him. That shows a good presence of mind.

Final Thoughts:

This was a mediocre show with a terrible main event. It contained some good stuff, but even that wasn’t outstanding. WCW is turning people away with their baffling booking. The fans wanted Flair to win the belt at SuperBrawl. Instead, WCW waited a month and turned Flair heel. They are begging people to turn and watch the WWF. Watching WCW’s decline is sad.

Thank you for reading. My next review is ECW’s Living Dangerously ’99. Look for it next Sunday.
