St. Valentine’s Day Massacre: In Your House

February 14, 1999

The Pyramid

Memphis, Tennessee

News & Notes: I covered some of the build in my Halftime Heat review, so I won’t repeat anything I already mentioned. Read that article if you want to catch up. With that said, I only have two extra storylines to discuss. First, Droz started a beef with the Oddities. He broke a broom over Kurrgan to defeat him. Golga and Silva attacked him, so Droz enlisted the DOA’s help. They cost the Oddities a match against Too Much. When Kevin Kelly asked Droz why he hated the Oddities so much, he beat Kevin up. Meanwhile, Luna earned another Women’s Title shot. She defeated Jacqueline when D’Lo distracted Jackie.

On a side note, this is the final In Your House PPV. The promotional materials for Backlash used the name, but they drop it before the event. The WWF chooses regular names for their monthly PPVs. Most of them will remain the same for years, but a few of them change.

Opening Video - St. Valentine's Day Massacre

The opening video focuses on Austin vs. McMahon. It’s an old-fashioned black and white film. Someone who sounds like Betty Boop sings about her sweet valentine driving her crazy. They show footage of Austin making Vince’s life a living hell. We also see clips of The Rock, Mankind, the Ministry of Darkness, and Chyna. Then it switches back to normal. Austin guarantees he will beat Vince’s ass in the cage. McMahon says the WWF will never be the same for Stone Cold.

Commentators - St. Valentine's Day Massacre

Fireworks explode and make Cole say wow. This is the first PPV at the Pyramid. Michael says it has the fans jacked. Cole also calls tonight the final chapter of the Austin/McMahon saga. Lawler believes we will see closure. They are both wrong. Then Cole talks about the Last Man Standing Match. The Rock faces Mankind for the WWF Title. While they talk, the fans chant Jerry’s name. Cole says this is Lawler’s homecoming.

Bluedust - St. Valentine's Day Massacre

Goldust arrives for the first bout. Cole calls him bizarre, but his opponent is equally weird. The Blue Meanie helped Al Snow steal Head back from Goldust. Then Meanie rechristened himself as Bluedust. He comes out to Goldust’s music and wears a blue robe. They show a clip of Bluedust distracting Goldust. It allowed Gillberg to roll Goldust up for his first win! Bluedust distracted Goldust with a strange video of himself. It was a clip of him lying naked on a couch.

Goldust vs. Bluedust - St. Valentine's Day Massacre

Goldust vs. Bluedust

Notes: The Blue Meanie had enough of Goldust messing with Al Snow. He helped Snow steal Head back from Goldust. Then Meanie mocked Goldust’s gimmick. He transformed himself into Bluedust. Goldust jumped Meanie for this disrespect and hit Shattered Dreams. Later, Goldust wrestled Gillberg on RAW. Bluedust distracted Goldust with a strange video. He parodied Goldust’s provocative old vignettes. Bluedust posed almost naked on a couch. He painted himself blue. This disturbing display kept Goldust’s attention. So Gillberg rolled him up for a three. It was Gillberg’s first victory since changing his name. Afterward, Meanie gave Goldust a bluebath.

The Match: Goldust uses strikes, a spinebuster, and a sit-out reverse DDT. Then Bluedust regroups after a drop-down punch. Goldust retrieves him, but Meanie attacks the leg when they return. He puts Goldust in a spinning toe hold with some hip thrusts. Goldust answers by giving Bluedust a wedgie and spanking him. Next, he sets Meanie up for Shattered Dreams. Bluedust boots Goldust in the face when Goldust charges at him. He follows with a Meaniesault attempt. It misses, so Goldust nails the Curtain Call for the win.

Thoughts: I like these guys, but this was a waste. This is one of those contests/feuds that exist only to amuse Vince. He probably found it hilarious. It had the potential for entertainment, but it was too short and uneventful. Goldust is still floundering with no direction.

Winner: Goldust (3:04)

Goldust asks the crowd if they want Shattered Dreams. They say yes, so he boots Meanie in the balls. Lawler laughs, as Bluedust crumples to the mat.

Then Cole talks about what happened on Heat. Vince called Austin out. If Austin attacks Vince before their bout, Vince will fire him. So McMahon provoked Austin. HBK returned to keep the peace, but Vince spat on Austin. Stone Cold promised to wipe the spit off his face with Vince’s blood. (That makes no sense.)

Al Snow vs. Bob Holly - St. Valentine's Day Massacre

Hardcore Match for the vacant Hardcore Title: Bob Holly vs. Al Snow (w/ Head)

Notes: Al Snow forged a partnership with Road Dogg hoping to get a Hardcore Title shot. They had hardcore tag bouts against the Brood and the Acolytes. During the latter, the Ministry separated them and beat Dogg up. Road Dogg confronted Al for not saving him. He called Snow a psycho and attacked him with a chair. Then they booked Snow vs. Road Dogg for the Hardcore Title, but someone jumped Dogg backstage. They left him bloody. Since Al had no opponent, he wrestled himself! Al smacked himself with weapons and crashed through tables. Bob Holly tried to talk sense into his friend, but Snow brawled with Holly. The WWF then vacated the Hardcore belt. This will determine the new champion.

The Match: They hit each other with a chair and head into the crowd. Snow and Holly spray a fire extinguisher. Then the brawl spills backstage. They use wet floor signs, equipment cases, and trash cans. Snow even hits Holly with a payphone. Holly answers with floor tiles to the head and a drink container. Next, they move outside and scuffle around the production truck. The action heads across the street to a fence. Snow chokes Bob with barbed wire. He tells him to meet his girlfriend, Barbie Wire. Holly breaks free and takes Al to the river bank. They end up in the Mississippi River and try to drown each other. Snow rallies with kidney punches, but Holly snaps branches over him. Finally, Holly folds Al up in a roll of chain-link fencing and pins him for the victory.

Thoughts: This was good fun. I always love the unique locations, and this one had one of the best. Kudos to these guys for wrestling in the river during February. You could hear some of the crowd’s reactions. They loved the fighting in the water. Also, I liked the finish. You don’t see someone pin a wrestler in a roll of chain-link often.

Winner: Bob Holly (New Champion) (9:58)

Holly jogs into the arena and collects his belt. Cole thinks Bob finally shed the image of Sparky Plug. Meanwhile, Al Snow begs someone to free him from the chain-link fence.

The Ministry of Darkness Gathers - St. Valentine's Day Massacre

Earlier today, WWF.com got exclusive footage of a Ministry ceremony. The Undertaker says nine souls came together. He claims St. Valentine’s Day Massacre will pale compared to what they unleash. (I swear he said Valentime’s.) Tonight, Mideon steps into the ring with the Big Boss Man. Taker tells him to weaken his body and take his soul. A power from beyond spoke to Taker. Their fate begins tonight.

Cole calls the next match the Corporation vs. the Ministry. He says Boss Man softened Austin up for McMahon on a special Saturday RAW. Now he faces Mideon, who carries an eyeball in a jar. He places it on the announce table and tells Lawler to keep an eye on it. Lawler says, “Ah! It’s leaking. And I think it just winked at me!”

Big Boss Man vs. Mideon - St. Valentine's Day Massacre

Big Boss Man vs. Mideon

Notes: Mideon grew stranger since his transformation. He carried a jar with an eyeball inside and spoke in cryptic messages. Then Mabel reemerged as Viscera. He teamed with Mideon to fight the Brood. The Ministry attacked them and convinced the Brood to join their ranks. Later, Mideon and Viscera beat up the Godfather. They also went after Test on Heat. This was a mistake. Boss Man used the nightstick on them. He and Test then battered the Ministry henchmen.

The Match: They exchange strikes until Boss Man chokes Mideon. He says the Ministry sucks ass and cuts off Mideon’s rally with a low blow. Then Boss Man takes him outside and uses a chair. But he misses his shot and nails the post. Mideon answers with clotheslines, biting, and choking. Boss Man responds with face rakes, smothering, choking, and a corner splash. He also lands a Boss Man Attack and sliding punch. Next, Boss grabs a full nelson. Mideon reverses it into a belly-to-back suplex. He then counters a piledriver with a backdrop. It leads to a double down and traded punches. However, Boss Man catches Mideon with a Boss Man Slam for the three.

Thoughts: This was a dull heel vs. heel match. No one cared. The fans chanted boring. I get they want to do this Ministry vs. the Corporation feud. It distracts fans from the coming swerve. But it is hard to make fans care about two heel factions at war.

Winner: Big Boss Man (6:19)

Boss Man grabs his nightstick because the Ministry surrounds the ring. Then the Undertaker’s music plays. The lights go out and the Ministry jumps Boss Man in the dark. After Taker raises the lights, the Ministry holds Boss Man down for Viscera’s splashes. Once they incapacitate him, the Ministry carries Boss Man to the back. Lawler says the Boss needs help, but Cole wonders who can stop them.

Next, they show a commercial for WrestleMania XV. The event happens on March 28th on PPV!

D'Lo Brown, Mark Henry, and Ivory - St. Valentine's Day Massacre

Kevin Kelly interviews D’Lo Brown, Mark Henry, and Ivory. Mark flirts with Ivory while Kevin discusses the events from Heat. Debra wanted to change the equation, so Ivory and Debra scuffled. Kelly asks if Ivory is the antidote for Debra. D’Lo calls her the answer to Jarrett and Owen’s so-called secret weapon. He tells Jeff and Owen to recognize. They are coming for the tag titles. D’Lo promises Ivory will rip Debra’s clothes off if she interferes.

This leads to D’Lo and Henry’s entrance. Lawler asks Cole why he doesn’t bring him women like D’Lo did for Mark. Cole doesn’t answer. Then Mark gives Ivory a Valentine’s Day present. It’s flowers and chocolate. Meanwhile, Lawler hopes Debra interferes. He wants Ivory to remove Debra’s clothes.

Jarrett and Owen vs. D'Lo and Henry - St. Valentine's Day Massacre

Tag Team Title Match: Jeff Jarrett & Owen Hart (c) (w/ Debra) vs. D’Lo Brown & Mark Henry (w/ Ivory)

Notes: Boss Man and Shamrock are busy, so they put that feud on hold. But Jarrett and Owen have other teams gunning for them. Mark Henry made a move on Debra, so Jarrett and Owen attacked him. It led to a triple threat for the tag titles. Jarrett & Owen defended against D’Lo & Henry and Triple H & X-Pac. Jarrett hit D’Lo with a tag belt to eliminate them. Meanwhile, D’Lo learned Terri Runnels was never pregnant! He freed himself from PMS’s manipulation. Then D’Lo found a new woman to keep Mark Henry focused. Her name is Ivory. (She’s a former GLOW wrestler.) Ivory scuffled with Debra, so Debra suggested they make this contest a six-person tag. Ivory declined, but Debra and Ivory had another catfight.

The Match: D’Lo and Henry control the action with strikes and clotheslines. Jarrett and Owen score a dropkick and a bulldog. But D’Lo and Henry answer with a powerslam and a double clothesline. Then Ivory counteracts Debra’s distraction. However, Jarrett lands an armbreaker, and his team takes over. They do their own double clothesline, a diving fist drop, and a spinebuster. Owen then hits an enziguri and they use frequent tags and double-teaming. This ends when D’Lo turns Owen’s corner punches into a running powerbomb. Henry makes a hot tag and cleans house with clotheslines. Everyone brawls and D’Lo does a Sky High and a leg drop to Jarrett. Debra climbs on the apron, so Ivory confronts her. D’Lo and the ref try to separate them. This allows Owen to break a guitar over Henry’s knee. Jarrett then locks him in a Figure Four for the submission.

Thoughts: It was a solid bout. The wrestling was especially good when Owen and D’Lo were in the ring. I even liked the finish. There are only two gripes. They forgot who the legal man was for a moment. Plus, this made D’Lo look foolish. He brought Ivory in to counteract Debra distracting Henry. But Ivory and Debra distracted D’Lo. I still enjoyed this, despite those problems.

Winners: Jeff Jarrett & Owen Hart (9:34)

D’Lo and Ivory check on Henry while Jarrett and Owen celebrate. Ivory has enough. She attacks Debra and rips her blouse. Owen and D’Lo separate them, but Lawler wants them to continue. They don’t. Jarrett and Owen cover Debra’s torn top with their belts and escort her backstage. The fans boo.

Mankind Interview - St. Valentine's Day Massacre

Kevin Kelly interviews Mankind. He asks if the knee injury Mankind suffered on Heat will affect him. They show a clip of the Rock attacking Mick. Mankind says Rocky gave him a cheap shot. He sarcastically says you have to respect the Rock for following up on his work. It makes him a great contender. But it will take more than that to get the job done. The Rock bludgeoned him, but he didn’t make him say he quit. Mankind has a game plan. He is about to enter a state of mental preparation. It will turn him into a very ugly person if you can believe it. Kevin looks unsettled.

Val Venis and Ryan Shamrock - St. Valentine's Day Massacre

Next, they recap the Shamrock/Venis feud. It started with Val’s latest flick. The film starred Ryan Shamrock. Ken says Val corrupted Ryan’s mind. He disrespected his sister. No one gets away with that! Ken promised his sister he wouldn’t attack Val, but it didn’t last. Shamrock used a chair on Venis and beat him up backstage. Ryan told him to stop because she loves Val.

Billy Gunn is the referee for this contest. He does Road Dogg’s usual introduction. Billy calls his ass the peacekeeper. Then he says if Val and Kenny aren’t down with him as the ref, he has two words for them. This leads to Val’s entrance. Cole says Venis has a set of big ones to bring Ryan Shamrock with him. Venis takes the mic and makes a Valentine’s Day innuendo. He says he has a heart on for the ladies. Once he finishes, Shamrock arrives and runs to the ring.

Val Venis vs. Ken Shamrock - St. Valentine's Day Massacre

Intercontinental Title Match: Val Venis (w/ Ryan Shamrock) vs. Ken Shamrock (c)

Notes: I mentioned Venis’ sex tape and his problems with Gunn in my Heat review. Billy and Val wrestled each other while Shamrock did commentary. Lawler riled Shamrock up with details about Val’s new porno. Ken attacked Venis and Gunn and put Gunn in another anklelock. It didn’t stop Venis from taunting Shamrock with Ryan. She claimed she loved Val. So Ken jumped Venis during an interview and used the anklelock on him. The chaos spooked the WWF’s refs. They refused to work this bout. Billy Gunn stepped up to officiate the contest. He encouraged the participants to bribe him. Val offered him money and Ryan. He also aided Gunn against Tiger Ali Singh. But Shamrock intervened again. Gunn left both men lying and celebrated with DX.

The Match: They trade strikes. Gunn counts slowly, so both men complain. Then Ken and Val fight in and out of the ring until Venis rallies. He targets the back and puts Ken in a Camel Clutch. Later, Val performs a chinlock and tells Billy to ask him. Gunn says, “Ask him what!?” Ken breaks free and hits a DDT. But Gunn won’t count to three. It causes an argument, so Venis grabs a sleeper. Ken escapes and lands a powerslam. Afterward, they exchange pin attempts. Val retakes control, but Ken slams him off the top rope. Shamrock continues with a hurricanrana, belly-to-belly, and anklelock. Ryan helps Venis reach the ropes, so Ken confronts her. (He audibly tells her to slap him.) When Gunn breaks it up, Ken shoves him. So Billy punches Shamrock and rolls him inside. Val hooks an inside cradle. Billy does a fast count.

Thoughts: It was slow, but Gunn’s antics helped keep it interesting. The action picked up toward the end, and I liked the finish. They worked their way to something decent. It was good, but not great.

Winner: Val Venis (New Champion) (15:53)

Shamrock and Gunn brawl in the aisle until Ken walks away. While this happens, Val poses with his belt. Gunn spots this and jumps Val Venis. He leaves him lying and does crotch chops in Val’s face. Gunn then leaves, so Ryan checks on Val. She laughs while she does this. (Send for the man!)

Next, they air a commercial for a Mr. Socko t-shirt. Dig deep and order one now!

Chyna turns on DX - St. Valentine's Day Massacre

They recap Chyna turning on DX. Triple H faced the Rock in an I Quit Match. The Corporation tricked Hunter. They had Kane threaten Chyna unless Hunter quit. He gave in, but Chyna turned on him and joined the Corporation. She did it for greed. Hunter says it won’t happen again. Chyna threatened to open the gates of hell and unleash Kane. But Chyna couldn’t stop Triple H from beating Kane in a cage. An angry Chyna handed out low blows and tried to Pedigree X-Pac. Hunter stopped her.

This leads to DX’s entrance. Triple H and X-Pac ask the fans if they are ready. Then Hunter calls Chyna a jacked-up bitch and threatens to kick her ass. He also tells Memphis to get ready to suck it. Next, Kane and Chyna enter separately. Cole says this is the first time a woman will compete with the men in the WWF. She enters the ring and sees Triple H wearing her t-shirt. He rips it in half and throws it at Chyna. To make matters worse, Kane insists on starting the match. Meanwhile, Shane McMahon joins the commentary table.

Triple H and X-Pac vs. Kane and Chyna - St. Valentine's Day Massacre

Chyna & Kane vs. Triple H & X-Pac

Notes: After X-Pac threatened him on Heat, Shane called X-Pac out to fight him in a cage. Shane even dismissed the Corporation. He felt he could handle X-Pac. The cage lowered over the ring, but X-Pac was on top of it! He beat up Shane until Chyna intervened. She held X-Pac for Shane’s punches. Then Triple H faced Kane in the Cage Match Shane booked on Heat. X-Pac and Chyna interfered, but Chyna couldn’t prevent Hunter’s victory. However, Chyna stopped Triple H and X-Pac from winning the tag belts in the Triple Threat. Next, X-Pac wrestled Kane. Chyna tried to give X-Pac a Pedigree, so Triple H shoved Kane into her. Hunter knocked Chyna out of the ring and pissed her off.

The Match: Kane fends off DX until Chyna demands a tag. She knocks X-Pac down and avoids a Bronco Buster. But Kane tags himself in. He fights off Triple H and Pac again. Chyna even decks Hunter from the apron. Then Chyna evades Triple H’s suplex and slams him, but she misses an elbow. DX then takes Kane outside. Kane hits the post on a missed clothesline, so X-Pac uses the opening to attack Shane. Chyna intervenes. She gives X-Pac a running powerslam and crotches him. Chyna follows with a sleeper. Pac escapes and tags Hunter. DX takes out Kane and Triple H nails Chyna with a high knee. However, Kane low-bridges Helmsley. X-Pac returns and gives Chyna a Bronco Buster. So Shane distracts Pac and leads him on a chase backstage. Hunter almost gets a Pedigree until Kane chokeslams him. Kane then pulls Chyna on top for a three.

Thoughts: I enjoyed this. It had good storytelling. The crowd was hot. Plus, other than some early shaky moments, Chyna did well. I also liked the ending. They did a fine job continuing the X-Pac/Shane feud.

Winners: Chyna & Kane (14:46)

Kane shoves the ref aside and lifts Chyna to her feet. He then helps her to the back.

Rock and Mankind Recap - St. Valentine's Day Massacre

Cole talks about the next match. There must be a winner. If you can’t answer the then count, you lose. They show ambulances waiting backstage. Lawler says you might as well prepare for the worst. Then they recap the Rock/Mankind feud. We see footage from every encounter since Survivor Series. If Mankind thought The Rock was hard on him before, Rocky will bash his living brains in at the PPV. He challenged Mick to a Last Man Standing Match, and Mankind agreed.

They show another clip of the Rock attacking Mankind on Heat. Cole says if you can’t stand, you can’t answer the ten count. Then, during the entrances, Cole says he spoke with JR. Ross believes Mankind will stand even if Rocky breaks every bone in his body.

The Rock vs. Mankind - St. Valentine's Day Massacre

Last Man Standing Match for the WWF Title: Mankind (c) vs. The Rock

Notes: Mankind celebrated his second WWF title win by spending The Rock’s $100,000. He rented Max Mini for a night. Then Mick gave Kurrgan some cash and told him to invest it. The Rock demanded his money, but Mankind wouldn’t return it. However, he would give Rocky a rematch. The Rock asked for a Last Man Standing contest. He threatened to beat Mick with a chair again and fulfill his death wish. Later, Vince tried to make Mankind fight Austin. McMahon appointed himself as the ref, but the bout didn’t happen. Mick put the Socko Claw on Vince instead. Then on Heat, Dominic DeNucci, Bob Backlund, and the Iron Sheik offered Mankind advice and training. The Rock stopped this nonsense with another attack.

The Match: Mankind turns around and offers Rocky a free shot. Then they brawl to the entrance set. They whip each other into the metal beams. Afterward, Mankind puts Rock through a table with a DDT! When they return, Mankind tries a People’s Elbow and fails. It leads to fighting outside and Rocky’s usual headset shenanigans. Next, Rock targets the knee with a chair until he accidentally smacks himself in the face. A Cactus Elbow then brings more table brawling. Rock backdrops Mick on a table and brings him inside for a Corporate Elbow. Then he sings “Smackdown Hotel.” But Mankind grabs a Claw! Foley knocks out Earl Hebner in the chaos. Earl recovers as Mick nails a Double-Arm DDT on a chair. Rocky barely rises before they trade finishers. They also grab chairs and hit simultaneous chair shots. It knocks both men out for the ten!

Thoughts: It was another great bout between them. I like how each encounter brought something new to the table. They made it violent without going overboard. Focusing the attacks on the leg is a better idea. It still looks brutal, but it is safer. Also, I don’t mind the finish. It maintains intrigue for the WrestleMania build.

Winner: Double Knockout (22:00)

The finish displeases the fans. They chant bullshit. The officials check on Rock and Mankind while we see replays. Then the medics put the Rock in a neck brace and load both men on stretchers. Lawler says Mankind received more concussions than Elizabeth Taylor had husbands. As they load them into the ambulances, Cole says they will never be the same. Lawler says they should take Mankind to a veterinarian.

Austin vs. McMahon - St. Valentine's Day Massacre

They recap the Austin/McMahon feud. We see the Rumble ending. Vince waved his privilege to face the Rock at WrestleMania. But HBK informed Vince the runner-up gets the title shot in such a situation. Then Austin put his title match on the line to get Vince in a cage. Vince guaranteed no Corporation members will interfere. Austin promised to walk over Vince’s carcass and into Mania. Bloodshed will happen, but it won’t be Austin’s blood. Later, Vince made Austin run the corporate gauntlet. McMahon pinned Stone Cold after Boss Man used the nightstick. Vince said the WWF would never be the same for Austin.

It’s time for the main event. Lawler says they could write hate on every grain of sand in the Sahara Desert. It wouldn’t equal McMahon’s hate for Austin. This leads to Austin and Vince’s entrances. Vince hesitates to enter the cage. He stalls, so Lawler calls it a strategy.

Steve Austin vs. Vince McMahon - St. Valentine's Day Massacre

Cage Match for Austin’s Title Shot: Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. Mr. McMahon

Notes: Austin’s new contract stated he couldn’t attack Vince unless it was an official contest. So McMahon traveled to Texas to provoke Austin into breaking the rule. Austin led Vince and the Stooges on a wild goose chase. They went to a bar, a BBQ restaurant, and a pawnshop. Their antics resulted in people pulling guns on them. Vince and the Stooges found Austin, but Steve’s friends surrounded them. So Vince booked the aforementioned Mankind encounter as revenge. When that didn’t work, he put Austin in a corporate gauntlet. Austin fought valiantly, but Boss Man used the nightstick. Vince pinned an unconscious Stone Cold. He also goaded Steve again on Heat. HBK returned to keep the peace.

The Match: Since Vince won’t enter the ring, Austin chases him. They play a game of cat and mouse. Austin gets an idea. He fakes a knee injury to lure Vince in. Austin attacks. They brawl around the ringside area and into the stands. Vince tries to draw Austin into a trap, but he doesn’t fall for it. Then they climb the side of the cage. Austin bounces Vince off the wall and he crashes on the commentators’ table. The medics bring a stretcher. Fink tries to announce Austin won, but Steve grabs the mic. He calls it bullshit. If the son of a bitch still breathes, he needs to fight. The bell never rang to start the action. Austin dumps Vince off the stretcher and drags him into the cage.

The bell rings. Austin hits clotheslines, stomps, and diving elbows. Then heads for the door, but Vince flips him off. Austin returns for more. He stomps a mudhole until Vince throws a low blow. McMahon climbs only for Austin to pull him down. Next, Austin rams Vince into the cage and busts him open. He almost climbs out, so Vince gives Steve the old double deuce! Stone Cold comes back again! He nails a Stunner and taunts Vince. But then someone emerges from a hole in the ring. It’s the Giant! (Cole calls him by his real name, Paul Wight.) Wight rams Austin into the walls and helps Vince stand. Then Paul tosses Austin against the cage. It breaks open and Austin falls to the floor for the win!

Thoughts: This was great fun. It was more of a spectacle than a match, and that’s fine. I’ll give Vince credit for the beating he took. Vince’s bump onto the announce table broke his tailbone, but he finished the bout. The crowd loved this. It was one-sided, but that’s how it should be. Fans wanted to see Austin get his hands on Vince.

Winner: Steve Austin (7:55)

Paul Wight Debut - St. Valentine's Day Massacre

Cole says McMahon’s master plan backfired. Austin is going to WrestleMania. Stone Cold taunts Vince, who cries in despair. Paul Wight glares at Austin as Vince collapses on the mat in exhaustion. Lawler says Wight will make Austin pay. Cole says Austin could make Vince’s nightmare come true at Mania. He might win the title again. Lawler tells him not to say that. Then Wight helps Vince to his feet as the show ends.

The Good:

  • The main event was fun.

  • Rock/Mankind was great.

  • Chyna & Kane vs. Triple H & X-Pac was enjoyable.

  • The Hardcore Match was entertaining.

The Bad:

  • Boss Man/Mideon was boring.

  • The opener wasn’t good.

Observations:

  • Cole still doesn’t know the difference between stairs and chairs.

  • They built this Intercontinental Title feud for two months. It would be a shame if they changed it for no reason.

Performer of the Night:

I’m giving it to Vince McMahon. He took a hell of a beating and worked through an injury. And he is an older man who isn’t a trained performer. It’s impressive.

Final Thoughts:

This is an entertaining PPV. A couple of the contests fall flat, but the main attractions delivered. There’s enough good to great content to outweigh the bad stuff. The final hour puts this show into the thumbs-up category.

Thank you for reading. My next review is WCW’s SuperBrawl IX. Look for it next Sunday.
